Altador Cup X

The Altador Cup X banner.

The tenth annual Altador Cup began on June 1, 2015 and concluded on July 2, 2015. As with previous years, users were asked to choose one of 18 teams, each representing a different Neopian land. After joining a team, users competed by playing games of Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown. A staff tournment was held in conjunction with this event.

Format

Altador Cup X saw the return of the bracket system used in Altador Cup IX. The tournament consisted of five rounds and each round lasted five days. Between each round, all teams received a single bye day. At the beginning of each round, the eighteen participating teams were divided into three bracket. Each team then played five games against other teams in their bracket. At the end of the round, teams were ranked within each bracket based on how well they performed against the other teams in their bracket. Each team was then rewarded points based on their final position within their own bracket. Later rounds were worth more points than early rounds:

Brightvale	Brightvale's slow and steady approach to top place is quite likely to backfire. It may alienate the team's fans. Sometimes, the best way to move forward is with a spark and a bang. That is how a legend is born. The team has it all - players, resources and knowledge. Perhaps it is time to take a risk and make a mad dash to first place. Darigan Citadel	Though Darigan Citadel is one of the strongest teams in the tourney, the Cup has eluded the team since Y9. The team has shown no signs of giving up and has managed to hold their place among the top five. Their dream of becoming the first team to win two championships was snatched away by Haunted Woods last year. Will this fuel Darigan Citadel to win or will they begin to slide? Faerieland	No one is quite sure why Faerieland even plays the Altador Cup. Is it simply a diversion from everyday living or does the team care to win? All sparkle and no win can make faeries a dull lot, especially in a competitive tournament. Maybe the team has a surprise up its sleeve this year. One can only hope. Haunted Woods	Haunted Woods is riding high after their spectacular win in Altador Cup IX. Their victory was all the sweeter; the team became the first in Altador Cup's history to win the championship twice. Will this year see the team walking away with a third victory against all odds? Kiko Lake	If there is one thing Team Kiko has going for them, it is their fighting spirit. The team claws its way back time and again. Do they have it in them to become one of the top tier teams? It is possible but it won't be easy, not with stronger and more experienced teams zealously guarding the top ranks. But it is said attitude can take you places, and Team Kiko has loads of that. Krawk Island	If Krawk Island is disappointed about losing the chance to become the first team to win the Altador Cup twice, they are hiding it well. The team still struts around Neopia like they are the winners. They finished eighth last year, though they were one of the strongest contenders for the Cup. Kreludor	No team envies Kreludor its current situation. The team is under tremendous pressure to win the Cup again. After claiming the top spot in Altador Cup VII, the team fell to seventh place in the next tourney and did not budge from seventh place last year. With the club's heavyweights breathing down their neck to be number one, if there is one team that has lost sleep during offseason, it would be Kreludor. Lost Desert	It would be an understatement to say The Lost Desert's descent to the bottom in the ninth tournament was disappointing. The former Altador Cup champs finished at 16th place last year. It is difficult to believe this is the same team that gave tough competition to the rest in the first few tournaments. It looks like the team has lost the momentum it had gained. Maraqua	Maraqua seems to be in denial. Despite their repeated poor showing at the last few tournaments, the team is refusing to accept that they may need to change their game. They fell further when they secured 12th place in Altador Cup IX. Just when you think they can't get worse, they go ahead and prove that they can. Meridell	Meridell continues to keep its fans under suspense. 'Will they or won't they ever win' seems to be the question on everyone's mind. Is this simply a case of all talk and no action? That can get tiresome after a while. Meridell needs to secure first place or fans may lose interest in a team with plenty of promise. Moltara	Moltara stunned tourney veterans last year by bouncing back to third place from the 18th place. Talk about making a recovery! A change in game strategy and players was what it took for the team to get there. It shows the team is here to win and will do what it takes to get there. Mystery Island	Mystery Island knows that a well-planned strategy that is revised every season is the best way to surprise their opponents. After a bad show in Altador Cup VIII, the team put their heads together to change their game plan. This showed immediate results; they moved up to 11th place at last year's tourney. The team has confirmed that their game plan has changed again this year. It could very well be the plan that will lead them to victory. Roo Island	After blaming their dismal performance at Altador Cup VIII on bug infestation, Roo Island was left red faced after another bad performance last year. With no bugs to blame, the team had to own up to their shortcomings that led to this state of affairs. The team may not be able to worm their way out of yet another bad game this year. Shenkuu	Shenkuu fell by another rank to 13 at Altador Cup IX. But no one is panicking. Not just yet. Shenkuu has established itself as a strong, reliable team. Terror Mountain	Terror Mountain is feeling the heat and they will need more than blizzards to cool them down. Just when they thought they could make their mark, they plummeted from seventh to 13th place in Altador Cup IX. This year will be a tough one for the team. Tyrannia	Tyrannia finished fourth in last year's tourney, not a bad place to be. But the team may need more than a celebrity designer to grab headlines this year. With 'Spikes' Barmie hogging more print than the team and their performance, Tyrannia is under danger of being overshadowed by Barmie's latest prehistoric poncho. Virtupets	Virtupets shrugged off their humiliation with a remarkable recovery when they sped up from 17th place to second at Altador Cup IX. Fans will be comforted to know that the team did not simply bask in the glory of their last win during offseason. Altador Will Altador Rise from the Ashes? Altador's shocking fall to last place left the team and its fans shaken. It is not for the first time in the history of the Altador Cup that champions saw a dramatic fall. If it is lonely at the top, it is lonelier at the bottom, and no team wants to hang in there for longer than necessary. And most certainly not Altador. Lyvon Cibaire says, "It was tough but we are positive that we will recover from this setback."
Brightvale Hagan: Patience is Key Brightvale has put on a consistent but unremarkable show at the Altador Cup tourneys over the last few years. King Hagan is anticipating the Altador Cup X. "Though it has taken us long and it felt like an uphill task, Brightvale has managed to move up to tenth place. We have continued to pour in resources and the team has trained hard, so we are certain we will continue to move up a few places this year."
Darigan Citadel Fanning the Flames, DC Hungry for a Win The Altador Cup has always been just out of reach for Team Darigan Citadel since their victory back in Altador Cup II. They have continued to be one of the strongest contenders for the Cup. Reshar Collifey, DC's young but talented netminder says, "The team owes it to our fans to win the Cup. We've been lucky to have their support and unwavering faith in DC." On team captain Layton Vickles, Collifey says, "Vickles, as always, has been a wonderful captain... and also a mentor and friend. I have come a long way under his inspiring leadership. We are all impatiently waiting for this year's tourney and are going to bring our best game."
Faerieland Is it Time to Break the Spell? Team Faerieland is still hovering around the last few ranks in Altador Cup IX. The team has almost been written off though during the initial tournaments everyone expected an unexpected victory. This year there is talk that a disgruntled old faerie who was not invited by the team to an after-party has cast a spell on them that ensures that the team will never finish among the top ten for 12 years. Perhaps, it is time to break the spell!
Haunted Woods Will it be a Clean Sweep... Again? Wan Dirx may be out of the game but the former vaunted defense is keeping a close eye on the field. Team Haunted Woods made history last year by becoming the first team to win the much-lauded Altador Cup for the second time. "I am still dizzy from the team's win last year... phew, what a game!" he said. "I am looking forward to this year. I'm still rooting for my team, and I always will. There is no doubt in my mind that the team will claim their third Altador Cup this season. Let me tell you, the players are in good form."
Kiko Lake Underdogs No More! Kiko Lake continues to battle as an underdog in this year's competition. Unless there is a turnaround in their performance like what we saw in Altador Cup VII where they finished sixth, KL may have to settle with being one of this year's low-tier teams. To their credit, the team remains undaunted even when they play against more powerful teams that can (and do) annihilate them. "We are optimistic that this year's tourney will see a change in our team's fortunes. We have trained hard and we will put up a fight," said forward Meela Kitah.
Krawk Island Hale: No Regrets Krawk Island fell behind in Altador Cup IX though the bets were on the team becoming the first in AC history to secure a repeat win. Instead, the honour went to Haunted Woods. Could trading forward Ealyn Hawkshanks to Kreludor have been a rash move? Team captain Garven Hale remains undeterred. His steadfast confidence in his team and their game is evident as he says, "We stand by our decisions. Hawshanks is missed and we wish him the best. As for the tourney, we played a good game and that is what matters. There is no doubt in our minds that we will take our place as champions again soon. Not that we need a Cup in hand to be the best." Hear, hear.
Kreludor The Heat is On The Kreludor team saw some changes last year after the club intervened and played hardball to boost performance. The team acquired player Ealyn Hawkshanks as a forward and lost Coco Metrone. The move didn't make a notable difference as they still placed seventh in Altador Cup IX. Those familiar with the tournament going-ons are speculating Captain Derlyn Fonnet might face the axe next if the club does not see a drastic improvement in this year's tourney. Fonnet says, "It is tough but not impossible to win the Altador Cup X."
Lost Desert The Lost Desert at a Loss Despite a camping trip to improve team dynamics, The Lost Desert finished at 16th place in the ninth tourney. The team is at a loss about why they performed so badly. It has led to speculation that all is not well within the team, that some players want the club to sack team captain Leera Heggle. Forward Derbi Azar says, "That is untrue. Heggle stays. There is no reason for us to rock the boat. We are still one of the top contenders. We are taking our bad show last year in our stride."
Maraqua Maraqua: Game Over? Maraqua continued to fall in ranking after a not-so-stellar performance at the Altador Cup IX. Team captain Elon "The Black Hole" Hughlis claimed all they needed to better their game was a creative approach to handling their defense tactics. But clearly the strategy was not creative enough to show results. Understandably Hughlis has refrained from discussing his team's game plan ahead of the Altador Cup X. Will they spring a surprise and pull up to finish among the top five or will they continue to slide to obscurity? This year's match will definitely tell us which way Maraqua will go!
Meridell All Strategy and No Action? Finishing at ninth place in the Altador Cup IX, Meridell's ranking continues to rise and fall. While they continue to be known as strong contenders for the first place, they seem to lack the hunger to win that is exhibited by newer and smaller teams. Fans are beginning to doubt if the team has what it takes to go beyond a good game and play the best game. Defender Ilsa Ellits says (and not for the first time), "There is a strategy in place that will over time help us reach the top." How long will it take for this strategy to win Meridell the Cup? Ellits can't say.
Moltara Team Moltara: Mystery Player on the Cards? Just five tourneys old, an air of unpredictability surrounds Team Moltara in view of their dramatic rise to third place in Altador Cup IX. The team's strategies including bringing back goalie Harlis Neyhbol seems to have paid off. There are speculations about a change in game strategy this year as well though it is all very hush-hush. These rumours are largely based on unverified sightings of Captain Aldric Beign and a certain ex-player from a rival's team. Neyhbol has vehemently denied this while Beign was unavailable for comment.
Mystery Island New Game Plan Remains a Mystery Though Team Mystery Island finished at 11th place last year, they are still miles away from their hard-won second place in Altador Cup VII. It is progress nonetheless, for the Islanders have the potential to win the Cup. The team learnt the ineffectiveness of a few strategies to carry them through several tourneys after their sharp fall in AC VIII. Captain Volgoth said, "Complacency killed our game and we will not forget it anytime soon. We have continued to improvise our tactics though I don't want to discuss them in detail. But no... major changes are not on the cards."
Roo Island Uprooting Old Strategies Team captain Lilo Blumario said, "No, I am not blaming last year's game on bugs. After our earlier experience, we have taken the necessary precautions to keep bugs at bay. With no bugs to flick off, the team was able to focus on the game and we identified some moves that are no longer relevant. With that out of the way, players can explore other tactics that are better suited to their current strengths."
Shenkuu Shenkuu: 13 Till I Die? Shenkuu defender Timu has turned out to be one of the pivotal players in the team though she has played only two tournaments with the team. After taking the 13th place for two consecutive years, it may be time for Shenkuu to move on before they get too comfortable. Timu says, "It was not what we had hoped for but the team has proven itself time and again, and while it is fair to say this is not the best that we can play, it has not diminished our strength. The team still has what it takes to take on the tourney in a big way and vault up to the top."
Terror Mountain The Terror is Real After playing it cool for the last few years, Terror Mountain is now feeling stifled after finishing at 13th place in the previous year's tournament. It could just be from sharing the spot with Shenkuu and Roo Island, or it could be from falling back into the old habit of warming the low tier slots. This came as a blow to the team especially after they pulled up ahead to seventh place in Altador Cup VIII. Will this year's Altador Cup prove to be a game changer for Terror Mountain?
Tyrannia �Juggling Fashion and Yooyuballs The offseason has been a whirlwind of activity for "Spikes" Barmie as his fashion line has taken off. He will be returning to play Altador Cup X though he had suggested he may walk away from Team Tyrannia after the last tourney. Seen at a red carpet event recently, he says, "Yes, I will be playing this year and have not parted from the prehistoric squad. Still very much in the game. It was unfortunate that we fell in rankings in our fourth round and finished fourth but I am not worried. Post tournament I will be off to the jungles to revive the lost art of prehistoric stone and lava printing. I predict it will be all the rage."
Virtupets Virtupets is going for Gold! Virtupets' stellar performance last year hushed their harshest critics as they climbed to second place. Altador Cup VIII saw them at a dismal 17th place. The team's left defender Sela Pretore says, "Did we prove our detractors wrong or did we? The changes we made to our approach last year made a huge difference. The scores don't lie and climbing to second place after our previous tourneys was a cause for celebration. The team morale is still at an all-time high. t is not completely out of the realm of possibility that we may take home the big prize this year."
