Gadgadsbogen - meaning good good day in the native language - is the Mystery Island festival of fruit held annually throughout March, the Month of Running. It celebrates the phenomenon in which new Tropical Food sprout from the ground, while the previous year's tropical food becomes retired.

Overview[edit]

Each year, Llugh travels across Mystery Island, eating tropical fruit and spreading the seeds within them. The seeds bear fruit and vegetables which are new to the island, replace the older fruits and vegetables which have died out.

To celebrate Gadgadsbogen, the island natives hold a big tiki-style party. The party is marked by parades and street performers, and the highlight is a great Limbo competition. While the stress level is always high due to rising crime rate and tension between island natives and tourists, troubles are forgotten during the celebration. After the festivities, the new fruits are named in a ceremony by Cinto Pango, an elder of the Pango tribe.

Each year a Grand Bogen is appointed by the Island elders to preside over the festival and since 2003, this has been Rufus. The Grand Bogen wears the Bogen headpiece and a special lei to distinguish them as the festival's host, performing duties that include greeting the guests and helping to clear up any mess made, which are dictated by Island folklore.

During Gadgadsbogen, users have been known to rush the Tropical Food Shop for the new tropical food and other user shops in hopes of buying the last of the fruits which become retired, allowing for a profit in the future. Gadgadsbogen also serves as a general celebration of all things related to Mystery Island, often with Neopets released in new Island colours.

Origin[edit]

Llugh spreading seeds as seen in Neopedia story.

The festival originates from an old story told by Mystery Island inhabitants, in which a bet was created between Llugh and his friend Mizuko, when Llugh claimed he was faster than the sun. Mizkuko challenged him to race from one end of Mystery Island to the other in a day, effectively beating the sun. Llugh's race across Mystery Island was arduous but was aided by the fruits he'd took along for sustenance. Due to a hole in his bag, he lost all his fruit except for three Juppies, and when a hungry traveller asked if Llugh could spare a Juppie just as the sun was setting, Llugh kindly gave away his last Yellow Juppie. The traveller was in fact an Earth Faerie called Tyleine, who granted Llugh the strength to get to the edge of Mystery Island before the sun had gone over the horizon. When Llugh returned, Tyleine returned the Yellow Juppie, and asked him to throw the seeds of the Juppie along the road as he ate so new plants would grow. When he does this, new fruits and vegetables grow, a ritual he repeats each year.

On March 3, 2003, a Gadgadsbogen party was held, which was specially attended by Kyishi, Tiki Tack Man, Rufus (Grand Bogen for the first time), Vik, Harry, and Jhuidah. After the party, users were asked to make a collection of guesses as to which attendee did what. The guesses were: the colour of the grass skirt, how low they could limbo, which cocktail they drank, and what tropical fruit they ate.
