There are too many genres, they make a new genre for nearly every band that comes out.

I like.. Rock, Alternative. I don't like Lavigne or Maroon 5 though, even though they are considered Rock or Punk or something.
But there are way too many genres. My favorite band is labeled "Nu Metal" though I consider them rock.

I would say Maroon 5 is kinda more Pop than rock.
