Ok first of all,

1. Neopets have millions and millions of players so if there was to be a virus, they will most likely get sued and stuff

2. I played neopets for like 6yrs and nothing happened to me so far. Thus, it is safe

3. Get yourself some anti-virus thingy to help out. They work wonders. =]

Hope u can come back to Neopets soon!

Did you try formatting your hard drive and reinstalling your operationg system from scratch? That's usually the best way to deal with such things.

I know this advice is probably late and pointless at this point but never the less...

Virals from Neopets are unheard of. I remember one person saying that Neopets Egyptian Calculator from the Lost Desert gave them a virus but obviously, since no one else suffered this, this person, like your mother, accused the wrong site or their program lied to them.

Your mother is being very unfair and ignorant. She should email Neopets and ask them directly or look online for the name of the virus, (if you can,) and figure out how it gets on to the HD and other USEFUL information like that, WHILE waiting for the mail from Neo.

I hope your mother will learn from this and be WAY more open minded. Talk with your mother, in a calm, "I just want to talk, not kill you for this (yet)" kind of tone and tell her what we've told you. Tell her to EMAIL neo. Their contact info is always open to the public and when it comes to a serious matter such as this, they usually respond quickly.

Oh and so your mother knows that this info comes from a reliable source. I'm 21, and I've been playing Neo for YEARS. Never got a virus from it and no spyware aside from a harmless cookie file. Reason why I'm stating my age is because I know some parents can think, "These are just kids, what do they know." Not saying that is the case, I'm just trying to cover all the bases here.

What Antivirus do you use? I use AVG and to me is the best Antivirus software outthere. It's a small program and won't take up size and resources like Norton.

http://free.grisoft.com Is the free site. You can use that or get the full version for $49.99

THe Adware program I use is Spybot. Also a good program.

I hope your mother didn't buy tools that are available free on the internet, but...

http://www.mypctuneup.com/evaluate.php icontains a removal tool. Follow the directions, and it will remove Aurora

Some good general info: http://spywarewarrior.com/sww-help.htm

NEVER click on a popup that says it will "help" you do anything. Stay away from Kazaa, bittorrent, and watch what comes through on instant messaging programs (You should have good parental supervision anyway)

Hi

I just went to the netintegration forums - which is a good place, and is part of Spybot Search and Destroy, a good anti-spyware program, along with ad-aware, CWShredder, spywareblaster - this one helps to block baddies before they can get on your computer and also HijackThis - which is a scanner and shows all the programs on your computer. It will not remove anything by itself, but it's very useful!

http://forums.net-integration.net/index ... &hl=aurora

This topic shows alot of information about what to do, where to go, what to d/l, what to remove and how to remove it.

You should also have anti-virus protection. And keep everything updated! I check for updates on my spyware programs once a week; my anti-virus updates automatically. If you use windows, you should also be sure to get all the security updates whenever they are released.

Hope that helps, and tell your mom that as far as I could tell from doing a Google Search on both Aurora and pokapoka, I highly! doubt this came from Neopets. I know I'm on the site every day, did not have a firewall when I was on dial-up -- but did have all the above a/v and spyware programs -- that one never hit my computer and there were days when Neo was the only place I went.

Like everyone else has said, I suggest getting Firefox and Adblock. It is really a much nicer interface to browse with anyways, in my opinion. But I get less viruses since less people exploit Firefox and Mozilla's loopholes.

And I don't see why. With half the world using Firefox these days, wouldn't it be more, err, "productive" for evil people like virus and spyware makers to exploit Firefox?

Firefox (and parent program mozilla) combined only have about a 10% saturation rate. Overall, 85% of the world still uses IE.

And IE's popup blockers (since it's the popups that do the damage and install the spyware) are all add-in extensions that you, the user, must find and download. Mozilla/Firefox's, however, are already built in to the program and are easily configurable.

I'm on IE, and however much I would LOVE to firefox. however, my parents aren't all that fond of the idea.

super, where else are you or whoever else who uses the computers going? This aurora is not coming from Neopets. I have been scanning alot lately because of something my roomie did (maraqua ... I told her not to go there :x ). I've not found aurora or any variant or part of it using:

McAfee Anti-Virus
Avert Stinger Stand alone a/v
Spybot Search and Destroy
Ad-Aware
CWShredder
Panda Online
Trend Micro Online

scanning via HijackThis

and I use Spywareblaster

I also use IE mostly, though I have my security and privacy set on custom levels. Yes, I now have Firefox, but no real big add-ons. Nothing's 100% anyway - I mainly use the firefox for coding checking.

and nothing's showing up in my ZoneAlarm firewall alerts/logs either.

I think if Neo was giving out viruses, alot of people would know about it, be complaining, kinda threatening them, etc. I know I'd never go back if, in fact, I got a virus and I sure wouldn't be quiet about it.

So, please, sit down and figure out what sites you're going to, whoever is using the computers also - and tell your parents to take care of security on the computers. Gotta have the programs, gotta keep them updated and gotta do scans.

Edit - just thought of something ... you all didn't d/l any toolbars, kazaa or anything like that did you? Many of those are loaded with spyware and who knows what else.
