“Dress for success.” For some, that might mean simply throwing on a pair of jeans without a hole in the knee; for others, it’s dressing decked out in a suit and tie. In my opinion, dressing for success is a personal issue. One can only dress for living their own successful lifestyle, and no one can tell you how this should be done. How exactly to dress for success varies depending on your age, location, and where you work or attend school. How you dress can affect your entire life, from how you perform during one test at school to where you go to college or what your career is.
Appearance and how you present yourself matters to almost anyone you meet. A first impression is golden and you rarely get a chance to make it up. Picture this scenario: two young women with the same qualifications come into a job interview. One wears jeans and a t-shirt with a slogan across the chest, shoulders slumped and eyes cast to the floor. On the other hand, a woman with a confident stride, dressed in a nice black jacket and pants waltzes in. With the same qualifications, who would the employer choose? The second woman dresses herself in confidence as well as dressing nicely on the outside. “Dressing for success” is both carrying your attitude and your clothing, and if you act in a positive, confident way and then dress in a similar style you are more likely to succeed.
How you dress in a school or work setting influences how you perform. You need to dress comfortably and appropriately so that your outfit lets you act to the best of your ability. Many teenaged girls, especially, wear outfits which enhance how they look. However, these outfits can be distracting to themselves if they are not comfortable. For instance, constantly pulling down that shirt to make sure you don’t get in trouble for baring your midriff can never be good for your concentration. Anyone who sits near you who happens to be easily distracted could also lose concentration and instead wonder why you’re wearing a shirt you constantly have to pull down. Ultimately, this type of dress isn’t appropriate for a school setting and can hurt your grades and even those of others around you. However, someone who instead dresses in comfortable jeans and a regular shirt of an appropriate length is more likely to be able to concentrate during class because they don’t have to constantly be worrying how they appear to others or have to fidget with their outfit.
In conclusion, dressing for success is a personal choice. However, your decision on how you dress and carry your attitude can affect you for the rest of your life. It can even go as far as to affect those around you. You should dress to look tidy and professional, but keep yourself comfortable. Keeping in mind where you are is always helpful: you cannot dress like you’re partying for an eight-hour school day. To some people, how you dress may only be a way to attract attention, but it is important to dress for success.
