btw contrary to what they say no other site uses banners taht big and i'm quite a computer user here. the biggest i see used continuously in link advertisments is 800x60 or 486x60. they're own advertising banners are not that size this post will be tottally unlike me but i'm seeing this as a way to FORCE people to pay to be premium and that to me goes against everything neopets said it was.
edit : yeck posted before i wanted to. The point being of the smaller banners is dialup users an image of hte size neopets is loading in at first is sure to cause dialup users problems loading in pages. i'm on cable and noticing the wait.

I have a big screen res and this thing is still huge. I sure miss the good old days when NP's was banner free.
Tue Nov 30, 2004 2:43 pm
well...so far my biggest complaint is the moving of user name/ np...couldn't they have put the clock and search bar up there...its just confusing...
I agree that those are by far the biggest ads I've seen- (I guess that they're not actually bigger- but they look huge because of the positioning_)
also, I'm on cable, on a relativly fast computer (I edit videos on it) and I just noticed that WOK was spinning slower...stupid ads

Pink PT uses banners that big.
http://www.pinkpt.com/
And Yahoo does as well.
The reason the site does not shift up after the advert is removed is because the advert is surrounded by "<DIV id=ban>ADVERT HTML HERE</DIV>". if the div is removed, then the site will shift upwards when the advert is removed.
Another thing to do as well is to remove the .ban class from the style section.

Something else you can do that might help is go to
http://www.download.com and search for "Ad Blocker" in downloads.
It came up with some nice stuff. Just make sure to read the description. I myself use Firefox though. If anyone can think of a way to get rid of whitespace, let me know!

Thank you.
Will you also be working on the messed up cards in pyramids soon? It's a little hard to play when the pyramid is sitting on top the draw pile.

Oh thank you!

If you really fix it so I can move the page up using Adblock, I'll take back all the complaint's I have made about it.

I have a fast DSL connection and it took FOREVER to load the mediachanger. I fear for those with dial-up! As soon as it was all downloaded, it was fast again. It owuld suck if I need to clean out temp files

It's funny because as soon as the new layout came up, I started blocking the banners. . .and then I was like, whoa, Neopets looks naked!!! So, now i'm just blocking the outside ads and not the neopets ones.
I actually really like the change including our info at the top. It's something to get used to, but I think it makes the whole site look more concise.
I think their next step is to get rid of the banners underneith the toolbar. They are a little redundant seeing that most of the pages have the Title of the area you're in anyway. (doesn't really matter, i'm blocking them anyway hehehe)

I went onto my gallery account, just to see what everyone was talking about. Dear Lord I feel like my eyes have been assulted.

I agree with everyone who says it'll be wonderful when the ads get fixed so they'll collapse away when blocked. I just want to give a big hug to whoever came up with the idea to take the off of lookups completely. Seriously, that is so great, and it will definently spare you guys from some of the angry villagers out there.
Everything looks misaligned with the big white space right now... and I keep thinking I'm logged out. I get scared when I don't see my name. It takes me a second to remember it shifted

Just something else I'll have to get used to.

Oh good Mr. Powell, you're here.
There was another issue involving the banners/spyware-ish stuff with the new sizing this morning in the previous thread we were using until this one. I don't know if that was adressed, but here is a repost of it in case you haven't seen it/tackled the issue
Here's your repost....I'll leave the screenie of the problem just as a link since last time I noticed it made me stretch the board.
everconfused wrote:Cranberry, it's very odd, when I click "here" on the news page it just goes to the bleh.phtml. And i see the smaller banner.
When I clicked on the link you had, I DID see the HUGEEEEEE banner and guess what! It's spyware infested! It was an ad all grey just saying "system tray update" and a link to click. Put my cursor on the ad - got http:// webpdp.gator.com gator is one of the most notorious horrid spyware out there! What the heck is neo doing putting clickable ads up in the first place? They're always telling us not to follow links off the site - but it's ok when they put links that could lead to bad sites/spyware or worse?
valerielundberg wrote:I went to check out everconfused claim, and yup...she's right. Horrid banner, and to top it off it MOVES in that awful earthquake-shaking fashion. What an awful banner.
Here's the screenie of the offense in question, yup..it's legit:
http://img126.exs.cx/img126/3839/aaaghnooo.gifMr. Powell, where are you? You've always been so good at adressing these topics.

Surely you do know these mistakes will end up costing Neopets revenue instead of making it in the long run....parents aren't going to be allowing thier kiddos on Neopets once they start having to clean spyware/malware etc from their PC's.....I trust you man....help us out!
Wouldn't be dumb to check what sort of pop-ups/spyware/hijackers/programs etc these advertisers of yours come up once you CLICK on thier banners either....just a heads up.
EDIT: Aw, I stretched the board. Sorry.

stampsyne, I'm on dial up, which we all know is slower anyway. It is taking much longer and I do keep cookies and temp cache cleaned out every day. It's also making games take longer to load.
I recently added more RAM to my puter - have 1 gig now, and the games were loading and playing beautifully. Now I'm back to having a black screen for at least a minute, then the game loads - slowly, then black screen and finally the game.
I agree that putting the user info at the top under the banner is an (unconcious?) attempt to have people sign up for premium since you can't get away from the banner if you want to check your np, or whatever.
Being disabled, there's many times I can't even leave my home. Neo has always been a place where I can lose myself and forget for awhile things that are wrong. Now it's turning into a place that magnifies my disabilities with having something blinking, jumping, moving, flashing in my face.
The premium? I still don't know what it consists of, whether we can just get one thing or what. I'm certainly not going to change my ISP of over 7 years to one with an awful privacy policy for a game. And I shouldn't feel like I HAVE to change and get used to a new browser for a game.
I'd be willing to pay a set amount each month to get rid of the banners. Say $5 for a single account, $10 a month for a "family" package - say there's 4 accounts on one computer with different emails - they would all be covered for one price. Heck I spend money on plushies, cards and the magazine. I'd certainly spend a little each month to have my and my roommate's accounts be ad-free.
