giraffe.neko. has always been an unconventional artist with her unique ideas and craftiness, but her recent post in the PPT Forum's Art Gallery takes the cake. I was personally amazed and felt the need to speak to .neko. about her giraffe. She, being the generous and awesome person that she is, agreed to an interview.

What was the assignment?

We were supposed to find, or scavenge an object that was an non-traditional painting surface, which is pretty much anything other than a canvas. Then we were to paint anything of our choice on it.

What made you decide to use the keyboard?

I picked the keyboard because I was looking around my house for an old object to use, and I saw the keyboard and I just thought: giraffe's neck! Sudden inspiration or something. So I looked for pictures of giraffes on google so I could get the head right.

What medium did you use?

I used acrylics.

How long did it take you?

A while. I think we had 3 weeks and I used all of it up. I barely worked on it outside of class though. So an hour every day minus the days when we were doing other things in class.

At any point in time, did you ever think this was a bad idea? For example, painting on the speaker and buttons.

Yeah, it was hard when I got to the speaker, the buttons were pretty easy though. But nope, I never changed my mind about doing it. I had a lot of fun.

Do you have any advice for anyone who might want to do something similar?

Learn some techniques, so if you haven't painted before, practice a bit, and get down some basic techniques. Use acrylics because they are easy and dry quickly. Make a colour wheel to help you figure out which primary colours you need to blend to get other colours. Oh and different size brushes are helpful! Have like little tiny brushes, big brushes, flat brushes. Oh also I drew out the basic design of the giraffe onto the keyboard before I started painting, that was very helpful.

Thank you for your time and I hope to see more of your artwork around PPT .neko.!

Nessa used her connections in the art world to get this interview.
