In the Mirror

The inspiration for this piece came to me when I randomly found the source image.   It is from a video game that I had never heard of. However the image really stood out to me and I knew I wanted to make something from it, I just didn't know what.

One thing led to the other, and eventually I came up with the idea to have her looking at herself in a mirror.   But the more I worked on it, the more I realized that it wasn't what I wanted at all.

Eventually it came to me!   Her reflection isn't her reflection at all.   Whatever it is... it is not happy.

It was not until I was nearly finished that I realized how awful the background I'd given it looked.   I had wanted it to look like two walls coming together into a corner.  But I couldn't do it by myself.

So I commissioned Yoshi to draw the walls for me.   It must have been a bit strange for him, as I didn't tell him what they were for until after he'd finished them.

The text on it just popped into my head, and seemed to fit quite well.   Though it literally fits the image, as the face in the mirror seems aimed to harm the girl, the phrase "the face in the mirror causes my destruction" alone seems to speak of self-esteem issues.

The end result is a piece that's quite creepy, with a very surrealistic quality to it:
