2005: The Year Of The Movie
Written by: Ixistant
Well, 2005 is now well underway. And with every new year comes the annual events. The Oscars, Exams, New TV Shows and the Annual Pink Ink Staff Kill-o-mania. Butdespite all of these great events, the one thing that almost everybody looks forward to in a new year is the new movies, and I'm certainly one of them. So in this article I shall be taking a look at 4 of the films that shall be gracing our screens this year.
The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy
Director: Garth Jennings
Stars: Martin Freeman (Arthur Dent)
Mos Def (Ford Prefect)
Sam Rockwell (Zaphod Beeblebrox)
Zooey Deschanel (Tricia McMillan A.K.A Trillian)
Bill Nighy (Slartibartfast)
Alan Rickman (Voice Of Marvin the Paranoid Android)
Stephen Fry (Voice Of The Book)
Bill Bailey (Voice Of The Whale)
Plot: When Arthur Dent wakes up one morning to find that his house is about to be demolished to make way for a bypass, he thinks things can't get any worse. But when his friend Ford Prefect reveals he's an alien and the Earth is about to be destroyed he is naturally stunned. But before he can ask him what's going on he and Ford "hitch a lift" of one of the ships about to destroy Earth and they're launched into an adventure that will teach them the importance of a towel, how fish can help with your languages and the importance of the number 42.
Opinion: Well, this is definately my most anticipated movie of the year, although that may have something to do with the fact that I'm obsessed with the books and TV series. But after seeing the fantastic cast list for this movie, I just know that this will HAVE to be good. It is esentially a British movie although it could be seen as too British out side of the UK but if it's anything like "Shaun Of The Dead" then it'll be fine.
Corpse Bride
Director: Tim Burton
Stars: Emily Watson (Victoria)
Helena Bonham Carter (The Corpse Bride)
Johnny Depp (Victor)
Plot: Victor is travelling home with his friend through the woods to get married to his fiancee Victoria. when the pair stop to rest, Victor places his wedding ring on a finger shaped stick protruding from the ground and for a joke and says his wedding vows. But soon he discovers that the stick is actually the finger of a murdered girl, who comes back to life as a zombie and insists that she is now victors wife.
Opinion: It's dark. It's sinister. It's funny. It's an animation and it has Tim Burton at the helm. It's almost too like "The Nightmare Before Christmas" to be true. But it is true, and it's coming to our screens this year and if it can even capture 1/3 of the magic that "The Nightmare Before Christmas" had then it's sure to be a fantastic movie.
Bewitched
Director: Nora Ephron
Stars: Nicole Kidman (Isabel Bigelow/Samantha Stephens)
Will Ferrell (Jack Wyatt/Darrin Stephens)
Shirley MacLaine (Iris Smythson/Endora)
Michael Caine (Nigel)
Plot: A producer remaking the 60's classic "Bewitched" unwittengly casts an actual witch for the role of Samantha.
Opinion: Well, this movie has just been sprung upon me and the validity of the plot above is still to be confirmed but if it turns out to be the real plot then this will make an interesting movie
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge Of The Sith
Director: George Lucas
Stars: Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi)
Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader)
Natalie Portman (Senator Padme Amidala)
Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious)
Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu)
Christopher Lee (Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus)
Anthony Daniels (C-3PO)
Kenny Baker (R2-D2)
Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca)
Frank Oz (Voice Of Yoda)
Plot: Three years after Episode II, the clone wars are finally beginning to end. Most of the Separatist Leaders are either dead or captured. The Jedi Council decide to send Obi Wan out to bring General Grievous, the leader of the Droid Army, and Count Dooku to justice. On Coruscant, Chancellor Palpatine declares himself Emperor and with the help of his closest ally, Anakin, he turns the old republic into the Galactic Empire. With Anakin slowly becoming the man we know as Darth Vader, Padme goes into hiding to protect her children.
Opinion: Well, it's the final movie of the Star Wars Saga. And I will be sad to see it go. I just hope that George Lucas has given it a good send off and not made it like Episodes I & II. But from what I've seen in the behind the scenes part of the original trilogy box set, the Obi Wan/Anakin fight should be fantastic.
Well, I've said my piece and I hope I've gotten you excited for all the great movies this year. And I know there are tonnes of other great movies coming out this year but these are just four that I shall most definately be going to see and seem the most interesting of the year. So Bon Voyage and enjoy your films people!
