The option to read to your pet is available, but when I select it I get an error saying, "Oops! This action is not available."

I know it has been possible to trade non-tradeables lately, but for me, the books aren't even showing up as non-tradeable anymore, while other non-tradeables (Starter Paint Brush) still are.
