It's one of the possible effects from the Temple of 1000 Tombs. I've gotten it twice.

Yes, it turns your active pet. It lasts less than an hour, usually, and then you can go into the temple again.

I'm not sure if it was mentioned in the Lost Desert Plot thread, but that would be the place to discuss it, probably.
