Another article on the subject: http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050620/nym153.html?.v=12

I really, REALLY doubt they will make it pay-to-play. Viacom has made a rather large investment, and they won't want to spoil it by driving off all the millions of users they keep mentioning in their site statistics. But by the same token, I don't think they'll get rid of the ads either. We'll just have to wait and see, I guess.

Heh, they made it NeoPets again. Adam will be displeased.

Apparently, Dohring and his staff will remain with the company.

Well, there goes all hope of improvement.

Yeah, I got the sense that Viacom isn't going to be running the company, they're just developing the advertising for all the commercial ventures and reaping the benefits. The site itself will probably not be much affected by this.

Viacom owns like every billboard and ad and such. I don't think their influence would be heard to us though

I just hope that they don't add more sidebars and ads. I don't know if I would want to pay to play either. I imagine they should always keep the site free, as a majority of the players only will play if it is free and only signed up because it was free. Anyway, I don't really care who owns neopets as long as it retains as much coolness or more as it currently has. If they change things too much I probably wouldn't enjoy it anymore. I think they should consider that some adults play the site and they should keep the battledome and still have wars and logic plots and everything we are used to and continue to add new content that we will like.

As Shapu says,

Quote:
NeoPets Chairman and CEO Doug C. Dohring, as well as the NeoPets senior management team, will continue in their roles following the completion of the acquisition, and will manage the company from its base in Glendale, CA.

Yeah. Crap.

I do, however, see possibilities here. I like the publicly traded thing - I can totally see myself buying one share, then calling again and calling myself a stockholder. Again, more motivation for them to keep us happy. Overall, I'm giving this a news rating of 3/5 (the movie was a -1/5).

And of course, the less power Dougie has, the better. ;)

If he's anything like my boss, I'm sure that he does, and that it helps him sleep better.

Yeah, the sheer amount of hatred in this topic amuses me. ^_^

Wouldn't it be funny if, as I've been told, he's a perfectly kind and pleasent person who has nothing to do with the ads and would be ashamed to know how much we despise him? I do doubt that, however.

Maybe now my parents will finally understand just how huge Neopets is. They remain convinced that Neopets is some site for little kids and how can their 17 year old daughter still go on everyday?! Viacom is a company they know; $160 million is a large sum of money. ;P

Also, if MTV now owes Neopets, does that mean a) they will advertise Neopets on MTV and b) Neopets will become 'cool' among the people who watch MTV?

And isn't WB producing the Neopets movie? I wonder what happens now..
