Grarrl and Kacheek engaged in a battle.

The Battledome is a turn based game where the player's Neopet can sparr against computer-controlled characters and other users' Neopets. The Battledome was discovered by Professor Chesterpot during the Hunt for the Battledome plot. The original alpha tests began on 15 November 2000, and the one player challenger alpha test began on 20 April 2001. The Battledome was originally made available in an open beta on 11 January 2001.

The Battledome received its first major overhaul in 2012, with a comic book style graphics update and prizes given out after each one player match. The old Battledome was withdrawn on 17 October, and following a brief closed beta test, the open beta of the new system began on 9 November.

Battling is a very popular activity on the Neopets site, and the most powerful equipment can cost millions of Neopoints to purchase. There is a full NeoBoard section dedicated to the game, and it is a common theme for Guilds. Plots often involve participation in the Battledome against plot specific one-player characters.

Gameplay

Punchbag Bob is a challenger that allows players to test their weapons risk free.

Entering the Battledome, the player can choose one of their Neopets to enter a match, and either a one player opponent or another player's Neopet looking for a battle to fight. The player must provide their own equipment for their Neopet, equipped to them from their inventory or the stats page. Only Neopets that have at least one hit point (HP), are not hungry, and are not sick may fight. Battles occur in one of seven arenas, which correspond to several different worlds. Each arena looks different but are otherwise the same. An eighth arena is available only for Neopets Premium members with additional challengers.

Battledome matches are turn-based, and consist of several rounds. In each round, the player may select up to two items of their Neopet's equipment for it to use, and select a stance or ability (either species specific or a Faerie ability). In the old Battledome, stances added an additional multiplier to the equation below, and abilities could add offensive or defensive icons, as well as heal or provide new weapons for the fight. In the beta, these have not yet been re-implemented.

Once both players have chosen, what equipment each battler used and the damage they did is displayed. Since the 2012 update, this is accompanied with battle animations. If both of the competitors still have health remaining, another round begins and this repeats. Else, the challenger with no health remaining loses and the other player is victorious. Matches may end up in a draw.

Damage is done by different numbers of elemental icons. Some equipment deals damage to the opponent, and some equipment defends against icons dealt by the opponent - many items do a combination of both. The actual damage done by a Neopet by a certain number of icons depends on that Neopet's strength stat. The amount of damage defended depends on their defence stat:

x = ( (i(a) - i(r)) × s ) - ( (i(b) × d)

where x is the damage received by a Neopet, ia the number of icons the Neopet received, ir the number of icons they reflected, ib the number of icons they blocked (of the icons the opponent used, not the number their equipment is capable of blocking), s their opponent's strength multiplier, and d their own defence multiplier.

As a worked example, suppose a Neopet with a strength stat of 125 uses the Scroll of Flame Strike. This weapon does three icons of fire and three icons of physical, and a strength stat of 125 corresponds to a multiplier of 3. Hence, the damage this attack will do is (3+3) x 3 = 18.

If the opponent uses a Leaf Shield in the same round, this blocks the three icons of physical damage but not the three icons of fire damage. If their defence stat is also 125, then the damage they receive is reduced by 3 x 3 = 9, and they receive 18 - 9 = 9 HP of damage. However, if the opponent had a defence stat of 300 - corresponding to a multiplier of 6.5 - then the three icons they block would be worth 3 x 6.5 = 19.5 HP, and their damage is reduced to 0 (damage does not go negative), even though the three fire icons got passed the shield.

In the old Battledome, at the end of the match the winner's health is restored to full. This no longer happens in the new Battledome, but the player can now earn Neopoints and items from defeating one player challengers.

Equipment

Equipment comprises of all the weapons and armour a Neopet may use in. They are bought, sold, or found like all other items, and are equipped to the player's Neopet from the inventory. Up to eight Battledome items may be equipped to a Neopet at any time. They are the main means a Neopet has of dealing damage to and defending against their opponent.

The player may choose up to two items to use each round. The damage they deal and defend against corresponds to the Neopet's stats and the number of icons the equipment does - see the worked example above.

Some items of equipment can heal the Neopet. Only one healing item may be equipped at a time (though there are some exceptions to this with items that heal but are not classed as healing items, such as Illusens Mud Mixture). Other items can freeze their opponent - this is not to be confused with The Neopets Team 'freezing' an account for rules violations, rather, this prevents the opponent from using any equipment or abilities next turn.

Some items reflect icons back at the Neopet that dealt it. These icons use the original Neopet's attack multiplier, not the attack multiplier of the Neopet using the reflector - essentially, using a reflector makes the opponent attack themselves. These icons are removed from the defender's damage calculation. Other items steal an opponent's weapon for the duration of the match - originally they stole the first item in the opponent's equipment list, since the 2012 update they steal a random item.

Equipment may be multiple use, able to be used over and over, single use, that expire after being used once, fragile, that may break after a few uses, or once per battle, that can only be used once in a battle but are returned for the next round. Certain exotic weapons can cause changes that persist outside of the Battledome: Chia Flour turns the enemy into a Yellow Chia, the Eraser of the Dark Faerie permanently deletes a random one of the opponent's weapons, and the Lab Ray Scientist has a weapon that can change a Neopet's gender.

Multipliers

New art, challengers, and gameplay tweaks were introduced in 2012 beta test.

The following table gives the multipliers for the damage calculation for each strength or defence boost.

Trivia

  • The 2007 April Fools prank said the Battledome was cancelled. Users were unable to access the Battledome Chat, the Hidden Tower, or shops that stocked weapons, until the next day. Premium members were able to access those areas if they switched to portal mode.
