'''Faerie Cloud Racers''' is a flash game where the user, as a [[Faerie]], pilots a ''Cloud Racer'' to try and lock their opponent in smoke so that their is nowhere for them to move to. The current version of the game replaced the old, similar titled, game that now resides in the [[Game Graveyard]].

==How to Play==

Hop into your Cloud Racer and try to head off your opponent with a thick trail of smoke. Using the arrow keys navigate your racer around trees, houses, and the smoke trail of each opponent. Try to defeat them as quickly as you can in order to earn as many points as possible.

===1-Player===

After selecting a character as whom to play, the player will then enter a round against their opponents. Using, by default, the arrow keys, the user can change the direction of their Cloud Racer. The Racers of the player and their opponent will leave a thick trail of smoke, which, in addition to trees, houses, and other obstacles, the user must avoid running into.

The object of each round is to continue to be moving when their opponent crashes into something. The most common tactic is to try to encircle your opponent to lock them inside a ring of smoke from which they cannot escape.

===2-Player===

In 2-player mode, both players must select their characters. By default, the first player manipulates their Cloud Racer with the arrow keys, the second player with the W, A, S, D keys. The object of the game is the same as in 1-player mode - to force one's opponent to crash.

==Players==

The game can be played by up to two players, but both players must be at the same computer to play against each other. The user can only earn [[Neopoints]] for their score by playing in one-player mode, where the user flies against the computer.

The player or players can choose a Faerie to fly as - either a [[Fire Faerie]], a [[Water Faerie]], [[Taelia]] the Snow Faerie, [[Illusen]] the Earth Faerie, a [[Dark Faerie]], the [[Space Faerie]], the [[Tooth Faerie]] and a [[Light Faerie]].

The player, in one player mode, will play against each of these other Faeries, and then against [[Fyora]] the Faerie Queen for the last level.

Before Maverick could come after Beader, she trapped him in a cage. Before the police could arrest him, he exploded, for he was a robotic replica made by a mysterious villain, possibly Dr Sloth.

The '''Usul''' is a [[Wikipedia:Squirrel|squirrel]]-like [[Neopet]] released on November 15, 1999 as one of the original Neopets on the site. Usuls are loyal and friendly pets who prefer to live in trees. During cold weather, Usuls are the first to share their food with friends.

The Usul began to receive large attention on June 7, 2001, with the release of [[Usuki Doll]]s and [[Usukiland]], an [[item]] type and [[shop]] which focuses solely on Usul-type items. The Usul can also be painted the ''Usuki'' [[colour]], which is unique to the Usul with the '''Usuki [[Paint Brush]]'''. Because of its affiliation with Usuki, the Usul is to date the most featured Neopet in all of the items in Neopets, with newer Usuki being added every year, including on August 20, the ''Annual Usuki Doll Convention''. The name possibly comes from a mix of "usagi", the japanese word for rabbit, and "squirrel".

As a general rule, Usuls are very friendly and kind and don't hesitate to share their food stores with other Neopets when the cold winter months approach. They also enjoy grooming, and are very proud of being Usuls (the default Usul petpage mentions "Usul Power!" several times). Supposedly, they are fairly gentle, but are probably a force to be reckoned with when they give their best shots in the Battledome. However, there are one or two (ONLY ONE OR TWO!) Usuls who display almost none of these characteristics, like the Shadow Usul.

A '''Paint Brush''' is a special [[item]] which gives the user the ability to change the [[colour]] of one of their [[Neopet]]s. Paint Brushes were originally found by [[Random Event]]s, which means they can be bought from other user's [[shop]]s or [[Auctions]], and are also given away as prizes from [[Contests]]. Special Paint Brushes can also be bought in the [[Hidden Tower]], and newer [[plots]] also allow users to buy Paint Brushes with the points they collected from participating (the first plot to do this was the [[Lost Desert Plot]], which rewarded the '''Lost Desert Paint Brush''' for 70,000 points). The recent addition of Key Quest to the site provided an additional method of gaining Paint Brushes by allowing players to win certain Paint Brushes as prizes, including the Biscuit, Camouflage, Cloud, Ghost, Glowing, Striped, Snow, Speckled, Starry and Tyrannian Paint Brushes. There are also Petpet paint brushes, which change the colour of a [[Petpet]].

In addition to providing new ''colours'' for Neopets, some paint brush colours seem more costume-like and fanciful, such as Halloween, Plushie and Tyrannian. Some paint brushes are rarer than others, but aside from the no-trade starter brushes, they all rank as expensive items.

To use a paint brush on a Neopet, a proper paint brush colour scheme must be available for the chosen Neopet, then the user must go to the [[The Rainbow Pool|Rainbow Pool]], where its waters allow the brushes' magic to work. Using just a paint brush on a Neopet or going to the Rainbow Pool will not change the colour of the Neopet, as both must be used in conjunction for the magic to work. A Paint brush can only be used once, and after using it on a Neopet, it will disappear. The Rainbow Pool should not be confused with the [[Rainbow Fountain]].

==Unusable Paint Brushes==
Very rarely, a paint brush colour is retired. The paint brushes become unusable (and in the case of the Unicorn brush, disappear completely) and pets painted the retired colour no longer remain it, but may be changed to a newer version. An example of this occurred on the 8th of January, 2002, when the Glass Paint Brush was retired, and replaced with the Tyrannian Paint Brush. Some of the glass pets were turned into the newer Tyrannian versions (the Shoyru was one of the first Tyrannian Pets), while the others remained as glass pets until a Tyrannian version was made for each of them. Paint brushes such as the Lost Desert Paint Brush, the Faerie Paint Brush, the Golden Paint Brush, and others are retired, but may still be used and [[The Neopets Team]] continue to make these colours available for new species.

==Petpet Paint Brush==
A [[Petpet]] Paint Brush is designed for painting Petpets a specific colour. They work much in the same way as a Paint Brush for Neopets - they are used at the [[The Rainbow Pool#Petpet Puddle|Petpet Puddle]], akin to the Rainbow Pool, to paint a Petpet attached to a user's Neopet.

Interestingly, many colours that Neopets cannot obtain with a Paint Brush, only with alternative means such as via the [[Treasure Maps#Secret Laboratory|Secret Laboratory]], are available as a Paint Brush for Petpets, such as [[Robot]] or [[Mutant]] colours. However, there are also some Petpet colours that can only be obtained through the [[Treasure Maps#Petpet Laboratory|Petpet Laboratory]], such as [[Chocolate]].

Each day of the month, users can retrieve a specific prize, which may include holiday-themed [[items]], [[Neopoints]], [[avatar]]s or [[site theme]]s. The prizes awarded are usually the same for all visitors, although occasional variation from this trend has occurred in the past.

Each day is accompanied by a [[Wikipedia:Adobe Flash|Flash]] animation, around which offered prizes are often themed. On the 1st day of the Month of Celebrating in Years 6 and 7, users obtained the ''Plastic Fir'' avatar, as well as the items and Neopoints. Despite its natural lack of agility, the Gnorbu has a kind heart and a good-natured outlook that can win it many friends. They also enjoy social activities such as browsing through [[shops]] in [[Neopia Central]] or eating with their closest friends.

The Gnorbu was originally made public under the name '''Llamameeah''', as part of the [[April Fool's]] joke in 2005. It was so liked that it won the contest for which of the joke pets should become real. This was timed to coincide with the introduction of [[Terror Mountain]] on November 16, 2000. The '''Kiko''' is an [[Wikipedia:Amphibian|amphibious]] [[Neopet]], and is one the original Neopets created on November 15, 1999.

==Overview==
Kikos come from [[Kiko Lake]] and other aquatic regions of [[Neopia]], capable of breathing underwater (though they can still travel on land). They have the appearance of a sphere, bearing only two arms. Their arms are used to travel in the water, enabling them to travel at high speeds. It is known from the official Neopets description that they are just as happy on land as in water, however, they dislike very dry places and need to be near water when young. To move about on land, Kikos bounce around like the [[Blumaroo]], but can also float in the air without any visible source of propulsion, similar to the [[Peophin]]. A notable feature of Kikos is the bandage they have on their head. How it came to be on the Kiko and what its purpose is unknown. Due to the similarity of a Kiko's appearance and a [[Wikipedia:Ball|rubber ball]], the patch could perhaps be a "quick fix", similar as to how people fixed air filled rubber balls in real life.

Kikos could originally be adopted at any time, but became [[Limited Edition]] around the time Kiko Lake was introduced. A warning was given about the change on [http://www.neopets.com/nf.phtml?nf_date=2003-07-07 July 10, 2003], when 990,950 Kikos were created. Kikos come in a variety of colours, and are one of the few Neopets who can be painted in different food items, such as ''Chokato'' (with the [[Chia]]) and ''Garlic'', colours which come easily to the Kiko due its shape. They are also one of the of the few Neopets which have access to more than one [[Lab Ray]] exclusive colour, with ''Clay'' and ''Garlic'' (shared with the [[Jubjub]]).

In the [[New Features]] for June 7th/8th, [[The Neopets Team]] released information regarding the beginning of the upcoming tournament. The words "''la, la, la... oh do you want to know about the Altador Cup?''" were used to link players to an advertisement for the upcoming event. Appearing in the advertisement were the infamous blaring crowd, as well as four highlighted fans, a [[Usul]], [[Aisha]], [[Yurble]] and [[Skeith]] who were cheering and shouting. At the end, a fire [[Yooyu]] flew through the trailer and the date 06.12.08 was displayed.

Althought [[The Neopets Team|TNT]] hadn't confirmed anything else but the starting date of the Cup, the staff of the Neopets help site [http://www.jellyneo.net/ Jellyneo] found evidence that the Kiko Lake team would not be participating in the 2008 tournament. They discovered an image of the updated chatboard logo, which shows the colors of the teams participating. The Kiko Lake colours of brown, green and black were missing, replaced with the orange and purple colours of the Kreludor Team. This was true, as Kreludor returned. Make Some Noise, along with Slushie Slinger also returned.

From looking at the outcome of the Altador Cup so far, it is said that Yooyu Ball is worth more than both Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise; one example being Faerieland losing to Virtupets in the finals although they won in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise.

To earlier reports, it has now been confirmed by the Committee that Kiko Lake are not participating in the third annual tournament. The Committee, three high-ranking Neopets who make every decision in the interest of the game sent out a press release stating: "''Now that every other team has arrived at the Altador Colosseum and the pre-tournament practice sessions are well underway, the big question on everyone's mind is: where is Kiko Lake?!?

''No one has seen or heard anything from them, and after initially extending the 9th Day of Relaxing mandatory arrival date an additional 48 hours, the Altador Cup Committee has declared that they will not be able to let Kiko Lake participate in the tournament. The committee has, however, set up an investigation into the team's whereabouts and sent out a search party to try and track them down.''

''When asked to comment on Kiko Lake's exclusion from the tournament, a committee member said, "There's far too much happening for us to simply hold an open place for them. For example, a schedule of pre-tournament training matches has been put together for the Colosseum. Including Kiko Lake on that schedule could create a situation whereby, if they fail to show up, their opponents will unfairly wind up with less practice matches than the other teams."''

Major changes also include the team rosters. New professional players have been introduced to the game. Altador made no changes, which was seen as "baffling" due to their mediocre performances. Brightvale made one change, they introduced goalkeeper Erli Quinnock, a purple [[Peophin]]. Erstwhile goalkeeper, [[Orie Dinelle]] was fired due to her "inconsistent play". Darigan returned with no changes, thinking that they will achieve their second win with the same level of talent. Faerieland signed Ciona Broan, a faerie [[Kyrii]], hoping it would be the "spark" which they need to get them going. Haunted Woods, like Darigan and Altador, didn't change their roster, as [[Krell Vitor]] stated that "there's no reason we shouldn't bounce back now that the spotlight is off us." Returning after a year of absence, Kreludor changed their roster significantly to try and get to the finals, ditching goalkeeper [[Xila Kitae]], and introducing Jurin T, a red [[Ruki]]. They also signed [[Ogrin]] Coco Metrone, right defender and described as "fleet-footed". Krawk Island made no changes to their roster. However, they did state that after many goals that [[Garven Hale]] has faced, his skills may decline. Last year's third place team Shenkuu signed Antola Maeir, a [[Zafara]]. They un-signed Turo Rafels, hoping that Maeir's addition to the team could keep them in the top three. The "dune dwellers" of the competition, team Lost Desert exchanged "Dirty" Navers for Lamelle Turow, a [[Kiko]], making Navers the first ever team captain to simply vanish from the cup. Maraqua signed Dorina Hals, an [[Aisha]] to try and create better scoring opportunities for other players. Meridellians will be pleased to know that the signing of Yoris Obbles could be a great addition to the Meridell team, although many have stated he will give an "unspectacular" performance. Mystery Island signed new goalkeeper Lor Benneveldt, a [[Flotsam]] in order to "consistently give up less goals than they get". Roo Island ceased to make any changes due to their performance last year, as they have "established themselves among the tournament elite". Terror Mountain signed their "fan favourite" Elbin Kroe, a [[Shoyru]] after his "aggressive and all-out style". Tyrannia have had endless calls for the roster to be switched, yet their managers have decided against it, a risk which may not pay off. Virtupets have received "lavish praise" for signing Goltron Mk I after their mediocrity with the previous tournaments.

Following up on last week's big story, a messenger from Kiko Lake has arrived in Altador bearing news of the team's fate. According to the courier, Kiko Lake's team was trapped by a rockslide that occurred while they were on their way to the tournament. It seems that, when the boulders started raining down on them, the players rushed to safety in a nearby cave. At some point during the disaster, however, the cave's entrance became blocked by boulders, which weren't cleared away until days later by a team of rescue workers.

Thankfully, the players avoided suffering anything more serious than a couple of scrapes and bruises. However, their time in the less-than-ideal conditions not only left them starving and weakened, but also cost Kiko Lake their chance at participating in this year's tournament. "We'll just have to regroup and give it another shot next year," team captain "Poke" Cellars said. "In the meantime, though, we might want to look into finding another route to Altador, preferably something a little less dangerous."

To the delight of Yooyuball fans across Neopia, the Altador Cup Committee has announced a change to this year's format. Unlike previous years, where the top two teams squared off to determine the tournament champion (and the next two squads fought it out for third place), a seeding process has been put in place so that all four finalists now have a shot at winning the title. Under this new structure, the first and fourth place teams will play for two days to determine one finalist, while the winner between the second and third place squads settles the other. Then, the finalists will face off for another two days to determine the tournament championship.

Rather than just sticking to the finals, though, this new format will also be in play for the rest of the tournament's participants. Teams five through eight, nine through twelve, and thirteen through sixteen will now be seeded within their own brackets. "Under the old system," one committee member stated, "once the double round-robin ended, supporters were faced with a choice: they could either jump ship and choose one of the finalists to root for, or stay loyal to their team and go home. Doing things this way will now enable loyal fans to stick by their squad to the very end."

==Plot participation==
The gameplay was similar to Altador Cup II, where players chose a team and then contributee points to it by playing games. Players were not allowed to change their team after the registration period.

Altador Cup III still used the "double round robin" tournament play, introduced in Altador Cup II. Each team played with the other fifteen teams twice, after which all teams will take part in the four days finals phase. The finals consistd of a playoff match-up and a final match-up, each lasting two days. The 16 teams then split into four groups according to their ranking. In the playoff match-up, the highest and lowest ranked teams for each group played against each other, while the second and third ranked teams for each group also played against each other. The two winning teams of each group playd against each other for the first place within their group, while the two losing teams fought for the third place.

Players could contribute points to their team by scoring goals in Yooyuball, and also by playing '''Slushie Slinger''' and '''Make Some Noise'''. The results for all three games were evaluated separately and contributed to the player's team overall standing in the tournament.

Other than playing for their teams, players could submit their own videos on how their Neopets got ready for the Altador Cup.

Following up on last week's big story, a messenger from Kiko Lake has arrived in Altador bearing news of the team's fate. According to the courier, Kiko Lake's team was trapped by a rockslide that occurred while they were on their way to the tournament. It seems that, when the boulders started raining down on them, the players rushed to safety in a nearby cave. At some point during the disaster, however, the cave's entrance became blocked by boulders, which weren't cleared away until days later by a team of rescue workers.

Thankfully, the players avoided suffering anything more serious than a couple of scrapes and bruises. However, their time in the less-than-ideal conditions not only left them starving and weakened, but also cost Kiko Lake their chance at participating in this year's tournament. "We'll just have to regroup and give it another shot next year," team captain "Poke" Cellars said. "In the meantime, though, we might want to look into finding another route to Altador, preferably something a little less dangerous."

==Neovision Altador Cup III Contest: "Ready for Fun"==
Players could submit a video on how their Neopets got ready for the Altador Cup. The video had to be 30 seconds to 2 minutes long before the credits stared, and the credits were not allowed to be longer than the actual video. All the other Neovision rules still appllied.

The top three winner got a trophy, 20,000 neopoints and an unknown amount of points to spend at the prize shop after Altador Cup ends.

==Prizes==
After signing up for a team, users automatically received an Altador Cup Background for the team they joined which they could use for [[Neopet Customisation]]. Also when a user achieved rank 1, they were given the "Altador Cup Player" avatar. At the end of the cup, when visiting the Prize Shop, users who did not have the ''Altador Cup'' [[Site Theme]] received it.

Released every Friday (unless time constraints can't allow it), the content of the newspaper is all user submitted, ranging from articles about certain Neopets features or [[Wikipedia:Fan fiction|fan fiction]] told through stories or comics. It also features an editorial by actual Neopets staff members, which answers user submitted questions about Neopets. The Editorial, up until around 2005, was run by site administrator and Neopets co-creator [[Donna Williams]]. The editorial directly communicates between the users and staff, making it the best source of information about Neopets straight from [[The Neopets Team]].

==Contents==
Originally featuring only a few articles, the Neopian Times has become a large weekly project filled with user-submitted articles, stories and comics. There are 4 categories users can enter their submissions into: Articles, Short Stories, Comics and Series:

''Articles'' acts as an information source. Users may either submit non-fiction writing to teach other users about a certain aspect of Neopets such as auctions or stamp collecting, or to give tips on playing the games. Articles can also contain fictitious news coverage of Neopia or interviews with notable Neopian characters such as the Soup Faerie, the Island Mystic or even [http://www.neopets.com/ntimes/index.phtml?section=67978&issue=185 Sloth's Mom]! Articles are between 1,000 and 50,000 words long.

''Short Stories'' contain Neopets-themed short stories on a range of different topics (comedy, adventure, horror, etc.). Stories can be about anything the user chooses so long as it is Neopets-themed and stays within the guidelines of the Neopian Times. Short stories are between 1200 and 4000 words long.

''Comics'' contain pictures or art drawn/animated by users depicting Neopets situations, usually containing jokes or ongoing serious plot lines. Users can also submit other forms of art besides pictures, such as photos of Neopets merchandise or [[Wikipedia:Adobe Flash|Adobe Flash]] animation. Comics are accepted in [[Wikipedia:GIF|GIF]] and [[Wikipedia:JPEG|JPEG]] format, ranging 470 pixels in width and 200 [[Wikipedia:Kilobyte|KB]] in file size.

The final category users can submit to is ''Series'', which can be the most difficult. A series is a fictional story too long to be a short story (more than 4000 words) which must be told over a series of parts. When a new series is submitted into the Neopian Times, it features in the "continued series" section in the following week's Neopian Times until its final part is published. Series average 6-8 parts with a limit of 12 parts (The Neopets Team limits the number so other authors will have a chance to be published, although there was no limit at the beginning), each part can be from 1,500 to a maximum of 50,000 words. A user can't have two series stories being serialized at the same time. A short (two- or three-part) series can also be used to tell a story that is too long to be a short story.

Along with all the user-submitted content, users can ask questions of The Neopets Team through the ''Editorial''. Questions that are picked are said to be random, but are sometimes picked by the TNT if it's something they're being asked often or they think it should be answered. Questions from game play, real-life merchandise, rules of playing Neopets, suggestions. Questions that include a joke or praise of Neopets are often chosen but all the answers give some insight to Neopets. The Editorial is perhaps the most popular feature of the Neopian Times, due to the fact TNT is directly interacting with the community and valuable information can be gained.

==Appearance==
Over the years the Neopian Times has gone through many appearance changes. The [http://images.neopets.com/nt first few issues appearance] had a banner of a man and a woman in 80's style with the text "For an easier life". Users could send in short stories, series and comics (comics section didn't appear until a later date). Pages still exist, but the links to the stories and comics don't work any more.

The second version was released on ''(need date)'' and was made out of tables. While continuing to showcase stories, an official comics section was introduced in issue 57. This version also had a ''[[Guild]] Spotlight'', showcasing certain guilds on Neopets, but was stopped in issue ''(need issue)'', around the same time the banner was replaced with a gold engraving of a [[Jubjub]] reading the Neopian Times. The [http://neopets.com/neopiantimes.phtml link to these issues] do not go to the old issues, but redirect to the newest version of the Neopian times.

The [http://www.neopets.com/newnt/index.phtml?week=149 third look] was a bigger version of the second look. A ''Quote of The Week'' was added, which quoted a line of text out of a story in that issue, along with a sidebar on the right which contained direct links to stories/comics, saving the user time by not having to search for individual stories in their own sections. Also, if a user was reading an article with a certain character in it that was in another one that issue, a direct link to it would appear on the sidebar as well. the buttons used to navigate the sections were made smaller, and the banner with the Jubjub was now changed to how many Neopians had read the Neopian Times instead of just saying 12,500,000.

The [http://www.neopets.com/ntimes/index.phtml most recent version] is similar to the third design, but it is easier to navigate (The featured stories on the front page are in a blue table for example). The navigation buttons were replaced with text and a random caption was posted on the left under the banner. The banner reads ''The Neopian Times'' with a blue quill on each side.

==Editors==
The first editor of the Neopian times was Josh, better known as [[Mr. Shankly]]. His trademark was his love of dung; most of the submissions in his last issue, issue 75, contained dung as a farewell gift, such as [http://neopets.com/randomfriend.phtml?user=hippiesoul hippiesoul's] short story [http://www.neopets.com/newnt/index.phtml?section=9158&week=75 The Dung Hero]. The Editor who replaced him was ''Felicia'', better known as Ms. [[Snowflake]]. ==Criteria for publication==
The rules and guidelines for entering into the Neopian Times are strict, due to the fact the TNT can't control user-submitted content but must make sure the content is family-friendly for the world to read. The main rule to always follow is to keep all entries Neopets-themed. From there, content must follow the basic rules which all users must follow while playing the website: No highly intimate material such as dating/kissing, violence inappropriate to younger audiences, real-life or fictional religion in Neopia, crude or disgusting Neopet behaviour, Neopets acting like real-life animals (e.g. eating out of dog bowls), hybrid species (two different species combined into one, unless it's [http://images.neopets.com/games/tradingcards/154.gif created] by The Neopets Team), or real-life family dilemmas (parents in a custody battle over a child). Users also can't write about the sponsor products which are featured on Neopets, even if Neopets are shown interacting with them. Articles speaking the rules and guidelines of Neopets are also prohibited, along with articles taking place inside [[Jelly World]], due to the continued joke of TNT saying it does not exist. Stories and series that break the [[Wikipedia:Fourth wall|fourth wall]] are frowned on, but references to avatars or games are allowed if they do not. In contrast, articles and comics often use the fact of Neopets being a website for humorous or other purposes.

One of the more difficult topics to write about in the Neopian Times is the users themselves, and how they are presented in the world of Neopets. Users who write about themselves as the owners of their Neopets is the most common and allowed form - many users portray this, but what they are as a species makes it more complicated. Female users can easily say they are faeries, while male users cannot as there are no and will be no male faeries in Neopets. However a user presents themselves or humans in general in the Neopian Times, they must always make their writing or art Neopets-themed, and never include real-life times and places such as speaking of the planet Earth (and its solar system) or about humans' origin in Neopia.

There are some plot devices which are debatable in terms of having them enter into the Neopian Times, one of the most common being the appearance of technology (cars, planes, computers, radios, phones, television, video games). Many of these items make appearances in the website and not just as sponsor material. [[The Space Station]] also has a large amount of technology which can be made available to the rest of Neopia. Characters such as [[Nigel]] drive a car (a [[Wikipedia:Ferrari|Ferrari]] no less), [[Brucey B]] was called on the phone during [[Brucey B and the Lucky Coin]], and games such as [[Skies Over Meridell]] and [[The Return of the Return of Dr.Sloth]] show flying devices have been created on the planet of Neopia.

The mortality of Neopets is also an issue, because while user Neopets cannot die, those in [[plot]]s can, making death an almost taboo subject to write about. Action scenes where Neopets are under constant threat of death (or excessive violence in general) may be rejected, despite the fact that many Neopets plots contain similar situations. The dead Neopets themselves also cause concern, as they can become zombies who wish to eat other's brains or become a [[Ghost]]. While what happens to the dead is mostly a taboo subject in Neopets, it was a major topic in [[The Tale of Woe]], which not only dealt with the graves of dead Neopets but also included communication with long-dead spirits.

Many authors argue, however, that death is not as touchy a subject in the Neopian Times as one may think. It is not clear how welcome plot devices such as these are, as the Neopian Times has featured stories talking of different worlds and characters not on Neopets. Many users feel it's unfair to have Lutari Island only available to Neopets Mobile users, which can't be had because of the cost or the lack of a Cingular cellphone, similar to the way some users don't have [[Neopets Premium]]. Unlike Neopets Premium, however, Lutari Island is located on the map. The fact that the [[Lutari]] themselves can be neither traded nor pounded is also irksome.

Originally featuring only a few articles, the Neopian Times has become a large weekly project filled with user-submitted articles, stories and comics. There are 4 categories users can enter their submissions into: Articles, Short Stories, Comics and Series:

''Articles'' acts as an information source. Users may either submit non-fiction writing to teach other users about a certain aspect of Neopets such as auctions or stamp collecting, or to give tips on playing the games. Articles can also contain fictitious news coverage of Neopia or interviews with notable Neopian characters such as the Soup Faerie, the Island Mystic or even [http://www.neopets.com/ntimes/index.phtml?section=67978&issue=185 Sloth's Mom]! Articles are between 1,000 and 50,000 words long.

''Short Stories'' contain Neopets-themed short stories on a range of different topics (comedy, adventure, horror, etc.). Stories can be about anything the user chooses so long as it is Neopets-themed and stays within the guidelines of the Neopian Times. Short stories are between 1200 and 4000 words long.

''Comics'' contain pictures or art drawn/animated by users depicting Neopets situations, usually containing jokes or a serious plot line. Users can also submit other forms of art besides pictures, such as photos of Neopets merchandise or [[Wikipedia:Adobe Flash|Adobe Flash]] animation. Comics are accepted in [[Wikipedia:GIF|GIF]] and [[Wikipedia:JPEG|JPEG]] format, ranging 470 pixels in width and 200 [[Wikipedia:Kilobyte|KB]] in file size.

The final category users can submit to is ''Series'', which can be the most difficult. A series is a fictional story too long to be a short story (more than 4000 words) which must be told over a series of parts. When a new series is submitted into the Neopian Times, it features in the "continued series" section in the following week's Neopian Times until its final part is published. Series average 6-8 parts with a limit of 12 parts (The Neopets Team limits the number so other authors will have a chance to be published, although there was no limit at the beginning), each part can be from 1,500 to a maximum of 50,000 words. A user can't have two series stories being serialized at the same time. A short (two- or three-part) series can also be used to tell a story that is too long to be a short story.

Along with all the user-submitted content, users can ask questions of The Neopets Team through the ''Editorial''. Questions that are picked are said to be random, but are sometimes picked by the TNT if it's something they're being asked often or they think it should be answered. Questions from game play, real-life merchandise, rules of playing Neopets, suggestions. Questions that include a joke or praise of Neopets are often chosen but all the answers give some insight to Neopets. The Editorial is perhaps the most popular feature of the Neopian Times, due to the fact TNT is directly interacting with the community and valuable information can be gained.

==Appearance==
Over the years the Neopian Times has gone through many appearance changes. The [http://images.neopets.com/nt first few issues appearance] had a banner of a man and a woman in 80's style with the text "For an easier life". Users could send in short stories, series and comics (comics section didn't appear until a later date). Pages still exist, but the links to the stories and comics don't work any more.

The second version was released on ''(need date)'' and was made out of tables. While continuing to showcase stories, an official comics section was introduced in issue 57. This version also had a ''[[Guild]] Spotlight'', showcasing certain guilds on Neopets, but was stopped in issue ''(need issue)'', around the same time the banner was replaced with a gold engraving of a [[Jubjub]] reading the Neopian Times. The [http://neopets.com/neopiantimes.phtml link to these issues] do not go to the old issues, but redirect to the newest version of the Neopian times.

The [http://www.neopets.com/newnt/index.phtml?week=149 third look] was a bigger version of the second look. A ''Quote of The Week'' was added, which quoted a line of text out of a story in that issue, along with a sidebar on the right which contained direct links to stories/comics, saving the user time by not having to search for individual stories in their own sections. Also, if a user was reading an article with a certain character in it that was in another one that issue, a direct link to it would appear on the sidebar as well. the buttons used to navigate the sections were made smaller, and the banner with the Jubjub was now changed to how many Neopians had read the Neopian Times instead of just saying 12,500,000.

The [http://www.neopets.com/ntimes/index.phtml most recent version] is similar to the third design, but it is easier to navigate (The featured stories on the front page are in a blue table for example). The navigation buttons were replaced with text and a random caption was posted on the left under the banner. The banner reads ''The Neopian Times'' with a blue quill on each side.

The first editor of the Neopian times was Josh, better known as [[Mr. Shankly]]. The rules and guidelines for entering into the Neopian Times are strict, due to the fact the TNT can't control user-submitted content but must make sure the content is family-friendly for the world to read. The main rule to always follow is to keep all entries Neopets-themed. From there, content must follow the basic rules which all users must follow while playing the website: No highly intimate material such as dating/kissing, violence inappropriate to younger audiences, real-life or fictional religion in Neopia, crude or disgusting Neopet behaviour, Neopets acting like real-life animals (e.g. eating out of dog bowls), hybrid species (two different species combined into one, unless it's [http://images.neopets.com/games/tradingcards/154.gif created] by The Neopets Team), or real-life family dilemmas (parents in a custody battle over a child). Users also can't write about the sponsor products which are featured on Neopets, even if Neopets are shown interacting with them. Articles speaking the rules and guidelines of Neopets are also prohibited, along with articles taking place inside [[Jelly World]], due to the continued joke of TNT saying it does not exist. Stories and series that break the [[Wikipedia:Fourth wall|fourth wall]] are frowned on, but references to avatars or games are allowed if they do not. In contrast, articles and comics often use the fact of Neopets being a website for humorous or other purposes.

One of the more difficult topics to write about in the Neopian Times is the users themselves, and how they are presented in the world of Neopets. Users who write about themselves as the owners of their Neopets is the most common and allowed form - many users portray this, but what they are as a species makes it more complicated. Female users can easily say they are faeries, while male users cannot as there are no and will be no male faeries in Neopets. However a user presents themselves or humans in general in the Neopian Times, they must always make their writing or art Neopets-themed, and never include real-life times and places such as speaking of the planet Earth (and its solar system) or about humans' origin in Neopia.

There are some plot devices which are debatable in terms of having them enter into the Neopian Times, one of the most common being the appearance of technology (cars, planes, computers, radios, phones, television, video games). Many of these items make appearances in the website and not just as sponsor material. [[The Space Station]] also has a large amount of technology which can be made available to the rest of Neopia. Characters such as [[Nigel]] drive a car (a [[Wikipedia:Ferrari|Ferrari]] no less), [[Brucey B]] was called on the phone during [[Brucey B and the Lucky Coin]], and games such as [[Skies Over Meridell]] and [[The Return of the Return of Dr.Sloth]] show flying devices have been created on the planet of Neopia.

The mortality of Neopets is also an issue, because while user Neopets cannot die, those in [[plot]]s can, making death an almost taboo subject to write about. Action scenes where Neopets are under constant threat of death (or excessive violence in general) may be rejected, despite the fact that many Neopets plots contain similar situations. The dead Neopets themselves also cause concern, as they can become zombies who wish to eat other's brains or become a [[Ghost]]. While what happens to the dead is mostly a taboo subject in Neopets, it was a major topic in [[The Tale of Woe]], which not only dealt with the graves of dead Neopets but also included communication with long-dead spirits.

Many authors argue, however, that death is not as touchy a subject in the Neopian Times as one may think.
