I was talking to a friend, who thinks to get an av for a petpet (i.e. gruslen, slorg, etc.), You have to keep whatever pet that has the petpet your active pet for the duration of 100 days. (Was that confusing?) Is this true?

I don't think that's true. I believe you just have to keep the petpet attached. What an uproar there would be if you had to also keep the pet your active pet! ;) I can just imagine the neoboards. lol There so needs to be an avatar like that. ;)

Jasujo's correct -- I got the slorg av without ever having that pet as my active pet. :)
