He had killed someone he thought was his wife's lover or something, and then he heard on the radio it wasn't him but his wife that had gotten killed? :P

The part of the song that "repeated" was a message, or something that he took as a clue to his "crime" or as a message to kill himself.

Meaning the repeated part of the tape either told police he was guilty, or it was the part that made him decide to commit suicide
