I've thought of that too. He probably was origionally going to be in book 2, but she decided it would probably give away to much info (I think book 6 will be a key book), and decided to just mention him in book 5. We all know she never mentions anyone and leaves them alone for the rest of the series (See Sirius Black :P)

See Florence. I mean, even if she does have some greater significance, I'm scared of going near her because of the ridiculous conclusions people jumped to last summer - they just have so many things wrong with them. Even at the time, it was a really stupid thing to assume, but now it's been hacked into bits, hacked into splinters, then destroyed in crashing flames. And I... I supported Cupid's Snitch its ownself. (At least I didn't support Trapezoid.)

See http://www.hpfgu.org.uk/faq/hypothetica ... l#florence for details.

But yeah, at least that would explain why Colin Creevey was there at all. He's really a pretty pointless character.

Still, "prince"?

Another reason why the HBP can't be Harry:

Harry Potter and the Harry Potter sounds like an interesting book. :D

I doubt it. Mark would've been six or seven at the time.

The reason I don't think the HBP is Dean or Mark is because of one single choice of JKR:

She could have put more information about them in CoS- But she didn't. If she had gone ahead and put the info about Dean in, then maybe I'd consider the possibility of him being the HBP. But she didn't, so I doubt it. ^_^

Right. We know its not Harry or Lord Thingy* because JKR has said so. I'm not sure who it is, if its not Mark. However, you gotta admit, Mark Evans MUST have some part in a book. JKR could have chosen ANY SURNAME she wanted, but she chose Lily Potter's maiden name. That is NOT a coincidence.

*Lord Thingy=Voldemort. Thats what Fudge calls him at one point in OotP, in the article in the Daily Prophet that lets the world know Voldy's back.

I agree. JKR does not have coincidences in these books. Everything happens for a reason :P

haha. I remember when Fudge called him the Lord Thingy.

It could be a red herring, though, because 1) if there were any Evanses alive, Harry would be living with them now and 2) Mark Evans lives in Little Whinging, where Harry is the only recorded wizard.

Well, we don't know if Mark's shown signs of magic yet, do we? I mean, Neville finally 'made magic' really late, didn't he? (Or am I getting confused... Ack...)

Or perhaps Mark doesn't live in LW. We don't know where Dudley and his gang go to bully others, do we? *Shrugs*

But Mark Evans is only 10, so I don't think he'd count as a wizard just yet (if he did posess magical powers)

Both Amethyst and Alex made good points. He probably doesn't live in LW, and probably doesn't count as a 'wizard'.

I think Mark Evans probably does live in LW. When Harry refers to him, it seems as though he knows of him as a neighborhood type person, or like they'd gone to the same school or something. But if this is the case, and he IS a wizard, then he couldn't be the HBP because he'd have to be a muggle born.

EDIT: Just realized that Mark COULD be a half blood if one of his parents was a squib. Technically, the wizard blood is still there, but the talent just didn't show in the person in question. Yeesh, this whole halfblood/pureblood thing is confusing...

Look I'm sorry, call me ignorant but who's Mark Evans????! And where does he come into the OoTP? Because I've completely lost the plot as far as this topic's concerned! o_O

He was mentioned in passing in the first chapter. :)

In OotP, Harry was asking Dudley who he was beating up that night, and Dudley mentions a boy named Mark Evans.

That's the only time we've seen him :)

No, actually, HARRY mentions Mark Evans.

The exact quote (this is from memory, BTW):
JKR wrote:"So who've you been beating up tonight? Another ten year old? I know you did Mark Evans two nights ago-"

-Pg. 13(ch 1.: Dudley Demented), paragraph 10, OotP

I knew it was something like that

I actually thought it was more of a significant point that Harry mentions him, because that would mean that Mark is from LW, as Harry seems to have heard about it by walking around town and listenting in on other people's conversations.
