Wisdom Teeth

Hmm, my wisdom teeth have grown in sideways, one of which has partly broken through the skin... everything's ok tho, so no surgery yet *crosses fingers*

mine are a bit like that. my bottom ones are growing in at a strange angle. but the english dentists said i wouldnt need them removed unless they started causing problems, but the aussie dentists wanted to take them out anyway - i decided to agree with the english guy!

My dentist would have probably trained the same way and in the same uni's as your English dentist... I don't know if there's somewhere in Scotland to do dentistry.

It was quite awhile ago that mine were removed but I'll tell you what I can remember. Mine were all coming in sideways so all four had to be removed before they broke through. The dentist I went to didn't believe in laughing gas so I only had noavcaine. I'd go with the gas as I'm sure it would be more pleasant. Mine bled for a few hours afterwards. One thing that helped stop the bleeding was to put tea bags on the stitches. My cheeks were really swollen for about three days.
Much more recently I had to have a front tooth pulled because it broke in half and that was a much better experience. It only took a few minutes to pull with much less bleeding and not much pain afterwards.

I had mine removed about two years ago, as people said, make sure you follow all their instructions. After you get them out you'll want to eat soft foods for a while (total amount of differs from person to person, for me it was only a few days) and try to drink plenty of juice I am not sure why but if the stitches hurt juice really seems to make you feel better.

I think mine are just coming through now (Bit late at 19 / 20 right?) And it hurts like Frak.

Mine are coming through for the last year n a bit? The alst ones just coming up, they've come up all straight like and non-painful like. Aint that cool.

Interesting zorg fact, I have one more tooth than everyone else. ^_^

My dentist was a moron, and after he did mine he lost his practice about a week later.

He only took one out (had to go somewhere else and get the other), and he only gave me a shot of freezing medicine. You know, like, for fillings..

I've never been in so much pain in my life.


The other one was fine though, but I was TO'd to go through it twice.

Schedule it for a time when you don't have anything pressing, like midterms, etc. Because, I hate to be the bad guy, but, depending on how impacted they are, you might be in pain for awhile. See if the dentist will give you liquid Tylenol with Codeine for the pain. The liquid part is important because it will hurt to swallow pills. The Codeine is important because it will help to knock out the pain. If the dentist doesn't think you are in that much pain, I still suggest getting liquid Tylenol (you can find it as a sore throat remedy and also in the children's section). And, most importantly, stock up on baby food. I know that it sounds silly as can be, but at some point in time, you are going to get hungry. And your mouth is going to cry at just about everything you put into it. Soup will be too hot. Soft foods like mac and cheese will be too chunky. Baby food is of the right consistency and you can heat it up so that it is just lukewarm and not too hot. When I had my wisdom teeth out, I lived on Gerber's for over a week. The plain meats, like turkey and beef, are surprisingly tasty, if you put a bit of salt in them. Same with the mac and cheese. I know, it sounds silly, but, I have turned to baby food anytime I have had dental work done. It isn't too expensive. Not totally without taste. And nutritious.

I've liked prune flavored baby food since I was born.

Mine aren't even close to coming in, but my sister's are. She wants to know if bleeding when the wisdom teeth are growing in is normal.

I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out when I was 14. I had an especially good surgeon, so it only took 45 minutes, they used general anesthesia, and he had me take penicillin before and after the surgery. It wasn't a pleasant experience, but it could have been much worse. A friend of mine wasn't prescribed penicillin in the same way I was (can't remember the details- she might not have been prescribed it at all), and her's got infected, but mine didn't.

I'd definitely recommend not taking a nap right away when you get home, or if you can't resist, sleep with your head on a towel or something, because your mouth bleeds for a few hours. I remember eating a lot of mashed potatoes and mashed rutabagas (my favorite Christmas food- I had the surgery in the summer, so it was the only time I've had rutabagas not around Christmas).

My stomach also hates Codeine with a vengeance, so I had to just use plain Tylenol for the first few days. When the surgeon found out about it, he prescribed me a pain killer that was stronger than Tylenol but not as strong as Codeine, and that seemed to help with the pain without irritating my stomach.

Best of luck to you- in about a week you should be feeling fine. Unless you're my mother, who loves to brag about how she ate Thanksgiving dinner the same day she got her wisdom teeth taken out...I wouldn't recommend following her lead .
