Urthdigger, please don't take offense to this, but if you're afraid of change, Earth is clearly not the right element for you- earth's probably the fastest changing element. It changes daily, in small or large ways.
Water, however, is usually unchanging. Tide goes in, tide goes out, every day, and such. (Well, unless you're counting the occasional freak change that leads to chaos and disaster for us, but hey, every element has it's ups and downs.)
For myself, I suppose I'm mostly an Earthy person (yes, really). But for the most part, I'm a mix of everything. As usual. (I say that because it's true. I'm never, ever one thing, and I'm never certain of anything. I flit and fly to different things all the time, and as such... I'm all the Hogwarts houses, all the elements... Heck, even all fashion styles, aside from extremely ugly. All colors, too. My hair's reddish brown with a hint of blonde in some parts, and my eyes are brownish grayish blueish greenish yellowish (yes, yellowish. Shut up.))
But in a battle of the elements, I'd be Earth. It's so omgz liek POWERFUL LIEK WOW. I'd bust your butts with my sudden-growing mountains and I'd rip the ground from under your feet with my super-speed canyon-making.
Bwahahaha.
(Don't look at me like that. I am more of a Slytherclaw than anything else. (I have Gryffindor and Hufflepuff within me, definitely, as I'm incredibly loyal and I'm quite courageous (I'm not being vain. Just because I have a good amount of self esteem in that area doesn't mean I'm Gilderoy Lockhart. And for the record, I don't consider bravery a compliment. I'd rather be called clever, or a good strategist.), but the sly shrewdness and logical seen-as-slightly-eccentric intelligence is quite a bit more in the forefront.)
