Since my team has already lost, making me ineligible for the best prize, I will reveal my secret Altadorian technique for scoring with any ball on anybody. (Yeah, I'm tired of waiting for King Altador to show up at my door and ask me to help him build a new kingdom.) This technique assumes your players have some speed. Altador was a pretty fast team.

If you'll excuse my crude drawing, here it is:

http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/2438/scoring3vi.png

Step 1 is something everybody is probably familiar with already. You win the faceoff (best thing to do to save time) or you intercept/steal the ball from your opponent. Run towards either side of the opponent's goal posts. What you want to do is draw their goalie as far away from the middle of the goal as possible. In the drawing, the dark blue circle is the opposing goalie being drawn to the end of his goal due to my player's running diagonal down.

After completing step 1, you have the option of shooting the ball diagonally up towards the vacant areas of the goal. This generally works with all the balls except the faerieball and saves a little bit of time from the rest of the technique. However, there's the chance you'll overshoot the far corner and miss the goal.

If you choose not to shoot after step 1 or have a faerieball, step 2 is to run up (or down, depending on your directional heading) past the goalie and across the goal. If your player is fast enough, you will outrun the goalie and put a bodycheck on him.

Step 3 is, once you have proper position on the goalie (as shown in the actual screenshot [I was running down from the top of the screen]), just shoot the ball in. Or sometimes another computer player will push you in the back, knocking the ball loose and into the goal. These are point blank shots. As long as you have good positioning versus their goalie, they cannot miss no matter what ball you're using. I didn't demonstrate it as well in this screenshot, but you can actually angle your player to run until he/she is right alongside the goalie, preventing the goalie from moving down (or up) and interfering with or possibly blocking your shot, which is what I mean by a bodycheck. Just don't flash the ball directly in the goalie's direction or it might get stolen from you. This screenshot has me a little farther away from the goalie, but I'm still wide open and able to get the job done with an uncontestable shot.

Maybe Neopets will see this lapse in their rules or AI defense and correct this. In real life hockey and soccer, I don't think you can bodycheck or even touch the goaltender like this. I think they consider it interference.

Hey I just noticed that Snarkie (a neo programmer) has "Altador Cup" in her high scores list. Does this mean our scores will eventually be posted in our high scores? Or that Yooyuball will become a np-earning flash game? (Kinda figured it would be) Or maybe it's part of the staff tournament... hm. Her scores are here if you wanna see: http://www.neopets.com/mygamescores.phtml?randomfriend=snarkie

P.S. GOGO LOST DESERT, we did it! 8D

If you click the game link it claims that the game doesn't exist. So it's either a future np-earning flash game or something to do with the staff comp - the former more likely, I think. ;)

I was playing for Terror Mountain in round one. I was kinda sad when we lost, but I knew it would happen. I only got a score of 28-0-1, after all. Heh. (Though there was the hope that everyone else was better than me... :P)
Now, I'll switch to Darigan Citadel. Even though they beat us, my pet is Darigan. It was my second choice anyway. But my home land came first. Heh heh heh.
If Darigan Citadel loses, I'll not know what to do. I don't wanna stop, though. :(

I was on the Virtupets team and seeing as we lost :( I can't seem to switch to a different team... is it just me or are all the supporters of the losing teams out of the tournament?
I really should train myself to not get my hopes up with Neopets because I'll just end up falling harder on the ground... face first!

Isn't it pretty lame if they showed the scores though?

I mean, many people would just look at it and see that Mystery Island was the most likely contender. And join them. And that's their ticket to the top.

What's even lamer*? is that we don't even know how the scoring goes, or is it just me? again... Still can't switch to a different team though :(

Just because Mystery Island scored the most means absolutely jack-diddly-squat! If the scores were cumulative, perhaps they'd be a good choice, but it's a good chance the scores will reset with the start of Round 2. This means that those of us who realize what is going on with the scoring now, will step up our games to completely destroy our opponents in the next round. People like myself, will be trying to improve upon already impressive win tallies to ensure victory because paranoia is no enemy when you KNOW you are crushing your opposition. I look forward to completely crushing the Citadel's next opponent with a greatly and vastly larger win tally. How big? Bigt enough to account for more than half of this round's total team points! However, I have a job, which makes that a not-so-easy-to-accomplish task. After I'm done with my service, it's hardcore crunch time to blow away opponents. Do I have any other DCs willing to try the annihilation with me?

Darigan Citadel needs YOU!

You, of course, being any Yooyu ball gurus out there now without a team. I would enjoy FRIENDLY competition, helps guarantee a victory.

It hasn't appeared - we'll all have to wait for tomorrow sometime. Then we can (hopefully) rejoin.

Mystery Island may or may not win - I reserve judgement for at least another round. All I know is they have a good chance at it - but now everone knows what it's like well, not the scoring), perhaps things will progress differently?

I'm eager to practice with Darigan, and see the next match ups. ^.^ And that idea someone had about TNT making the match ups about how many people on each team? That one was good. Would be great if that's how they did it.

Wow, if I have to read one more post about how awesome you are, I may poke out my own eyes. Heh. Not saying you're not great at the game, because you obviously are, but dude, the bragging. Guess it's a sports thing?

(Also, I know for a fact that a couple people scored 500-700 wins for their respective teams, one of which I remember was Mystery Island. So there are other real competitors out there.)

It's still hard to tell whether scoring is based on popularity or a wins/goals/number of team members formula. I thought for sure Faerieland would do better, but Mystery Island did turn out to be surprisingly popular (as did my team, Roo Island). So I don't know. I am glad that people have to join new teams without knowing who they're up against, though; it makes it much more fair.

Go Mystery Island! Heh. I was worried that Faerieland would do better, but we totally owned them. I can't decide if I should switch or stay with Mystery Island...now that everyone knows the score. :P

I like this game, just because it's one of those games where it's pretty hard to actually lose. I mean, the opposition team might get goals, but winning the game (by having at least one more goal than the opposition) is quite easy, in my opinion.

And personally, I don't think that TNT tallied up the number of goals because the numbers would have been a lot higher. Take Mystery Island, with a score of 769,323, and divide that by 9, assuming that people got 9 goals at least once in a while, giving 85480. Then we assume that 2000 people were on MI team, which is less than .001%, assuming most Neopians are not participating in the Tournament. Divide 85480 by 2000, and we get 42, meaning that if 2000 players on MI team got 42 wins of 9 goals, we would have achieved the score displayed. Most than likely, more than 2000 players are on the MI team and they scored 9 goals more than 42 times. Thus, I think I can safely conclude that the score is probably the total number of wins of the teams. It is possible that TNT also weighted the scores by the number of players on each team so that no team has an unfair advantage due to popularity. Who knows?

I'm guessing they weighted it based on Neopian distribution per team, and it seems that even though Faerieland had a good number of supporters, very few sent in any wins, or all losses O_o

Call me a dummy, but I can't figure out how to switch teams. I assume we can do that now.
