Just out of curiosity, why are programs like AIM and MSN such a necessity for transfers? What makes it more secure than PMs or e-mails?

I prefer some sort of IM because you can talk to each other quickly without having to wait for reply delay with like pms and such. Its much faster and theres a better chance of adopt rate IMO.

Just out of curiosity, why are programs like AIM and MSN such a necessity for transfers? What makes it more secure than PMs or e-mails?

Most users use AIM. Most users have reqs (such as Troggy above my post) for pets as well.

Because the recieving user needs to already be refreshing on the quick-adopt link when the sending user abandons the pet. I suppose you could tell the person to refresh at such-and-such a time NST, but with AIM it's much easier to make sure the reciever is ready and refreshing before you release.
