As you browse the NeoDex, you may notice a tab at the bottom of every article called categories. Categories help users find and cross-reference information by grouping similar articles together. Every article should belong to at least one category. If you would like to know all categories that exist on the NeoDex, see the full list.
Using categories
To add an article to a category, place the example coding...

...at the very bottom of the article. The category must be spelled correctly, or it will show as a broken link. Most notable categories have been created, but if you find one which hasn't been created yet, you can create the category yourself (giving a breif description of what links all articles in that category together), or ask an administrator to create it for you. When creating categories, they should be major topics which are likely to be useful to someone reading the article. Also, when adding an article to a category be sure it's obvious why it's linked to the category in the article and not have the user guess why.
Categories can also link to each other, and become subcategories. Subcategories become part of another category when information of them is more defined than the main category. One such example would be the Heroes category, which is a more defined category for Neopet characters to link to than Category:Characters. You can link categories together in the same fashion you would other articles, by placing the link of category at the bottom of the category you want to be a sub-category of another.
Organizing categories
Should an article have many categories, organize them properly for users to be able to navigate them easily. Below is the proper order in which categories should go if an article applies to any of the categories, along with some of their rules.
NeoDex
[[Category:Under Construction]] Added automatically on the article when the Construction template is placed at the top of the article, showing the article needs to be worked on (a reason given in the template). [[Category:Stubs]] Added automatically on the article when the Stub template is placed at the bottom of the article before the categories, showing the article needs more work in a certain certaion. [[Category:PPT]] Articles detailing PinkPT or official sections of the NeoDex. [[Category:Help]] Official Help articles of the NeoDex. [[Category:Disambiguation]] Article titles of the NeoDex which are ambiguous and can be interpreted in more than one way (Neopets can refer to the plurul of Neopet or Neopets (website)).
Neopets
[[Category:Neopets]] The base category which all articles connect to. If a user doesn't know what category an article goes in, it can connect here, where someone can properly place it. [[Category:TNT]] Articles detailing The Neopets Team [[Category:Neopets Rules]] Articles which detail rules within Neopets. [[Category:Neopets Terminology]] Articles which speak of common terms and words used in Neopets. [[Category:Neopia]] Articles which detail the world of Neopia. [[Category:Mini-Worlds]] Articles of lands in Neopia which are labelled as Mini-worlds. [[Category:Neopian Locations]] Special locations a user can visit in Neopia. [[Category:Shops]] Articles which explain shops or specific Neopets shops. [[Category:Plots]] Articles of specific plots in Neopets. [[Category:Interactivity]] Articles explaining areas of Neopets where interactiviy is involved. [[Category:Neopets Holidays]] Articles speaking of certain events or times which are special in Neopets. [[Category:Customizable]] Articles explaining areas of Neopets which are customizable by the user. [[Category:Colours]] Articles speaking of special colours in Neopets which change a Neopet dramatically (not plain ones such as Pink, Spotted or Fire) and have a history. [[Category:Pet types]] Articles of specific Neopet species. [[Category:Limited Edition Neopets]] Articles of Neopet species which are Limited Edition.
Characters
[[Category:Characters]] Any and all character articles are tagged with this category. [[Category:Villains]] Replaces "Characters" if the character in the article applies. Can exist with the "Hereos". [[Category:Heroes]] Replaces "Characters" if the character in the article applies. Can exist with the "Villains". [[Category:(Plurl Neopet Species)]] The plural of the characters Neopet species (if article is about a Neopet character) is placed in "(Neopet Species)", of which there are 54 as of January 2007. [[Category:Faeries]] If a character is a Faerie, this is tagged after the previous categories that apply. [[Category:Petpets]] Articles which document Petpet species. [[Category:Petpet Protection League]] Petpets which have been featured in the Petpet Protection League. [[Category:Petpetpets]] Articles which document Petpetpet species. [[Category:Gallery of Evil]] Articles of Villains who are also featured in the Gallery of Evil. [[Category:Gallery of Heroes]] Articles of Heroes who are also featured in the Gallery of Heroes. [[Category:Battledome Opponents]] Added if the character can be or was once fought in the Battledome. [[Category:Defenders of Neopia Opponents]] Added if character is a Battledome opponent in Defenders of Neopia.
Plots
[[Category:Arrival of Virtupets]] Articles of this category (and following ones) are added to articles which relate to or are part of the specific plot.
