After the [[Space Faerie]] destroyed his mutation ray in the [[Arrival of Virtupets]] [[plot]], and left his prized space station, [[Virtupets Space Station|Virtupets]] drifting in orbit, Sloth went into hiding, distributing [[Transmogrification Potions]], only occasionally getting involved with the rest of Neopia - most notably during the [[Brucey B and the Lucky Coin]] plot. Despite hiding in whereabouts unknown, the Neopians were still able to contact him - and [http://www.neopets.com/space/neopetv2.phtml?part=5 receive a reply] - during the [[Neopet Version 2]] plot.

The mastermind's return, originally anticipated for 2004, but delayed until 2008, was featured in the [[Return of Dr. Sloth]] plot. The temporary shelving of this plot was referenced in the title of one of the games he is featured in, [[The Return of the Return of Dr. Sloth]]. He is also featured or referenced in [[Neverending Boss Battle]], [[ToyBox Escape]], [[Carnival of Terror]], [[Korbats Lab]], and [[Splat-A-Sloth]].

Dr. Sloth sometimes masquerades around Neopia as '''The Happiness Faerie'''. Like the existence of [[Jelly World]], this is an inside joke in that despite The Happiness Faerie being poorly resembling Dr. Sloth with cardboard wings, he has still duped the Neopian population with his disguise.

His greatest achievements were the enslavement of the [[Grundo]]s, an alien race, and his creation of the Transmogrification Potions, which change a Neopet into a mutant version. He has also created many futuristic machines, vehicles, weapons, and robots.

In August 2000, Dr. Sloth came to Neopia with a giant, orbital [[Virtupets Space Station|space station]] and mutation ray, with plans of taking over Neopia and repopulating it with his Virtupets. In an encoded message, however, it was revealed that he actually intended to mutate all the Neopets on the planet. He was stopped by the [[Space Faerie]], who reversed Dr Sloth's mutation ray and caused it to explode, leaving the abandoned station in orbit. The plot introduced the [[Grundo]]s, and stopped [[Moehog]]s being limited edition.

It was revealed in ''The Return of Dr. Sloth'' plot that during his fight with the Space Faerie, Dr. Sloth managed to acquire the Space Faerie's Token for later study.

===Brucey B and the Lucky Coin===

Having watched [[Brucey B]] play in the 3rd Annual [[Cheat!]] Championships, Dr. Sloth recognised the coin Brucey was using to win every game. Setting up a high-profile Cheat! game, a [[Jetsam]] working for Sloth won all of Brucey's money, and betted it against Brucey' Lucky Coin. He played one four, and as Brucey had already played four fours, he declared the Jetsam cheating. Somehow, Jetsam had cheated at Cheat!, and did, in fact, have the last four.

Dr. Sloth then used the coin to gain entrance to one of the pyramids in the newly rediscovered [[Lost Desert]], and raided the tomb. Loading the plunder on-board his space ships, he used the artifact he had found there, the [[Staff of Alhasutek]], to wage a war on [[Sakhmet]] with his Grundo army. Although the attack started well, Dr. Sloth soon had to use the staff to summon the [[Rock Beast]] to hold off the defenders, and when it was defeated, did not have time to reanimate it before Brucey B destroyed the staff.

The weapon's destruction reversed its curses, and Dr. Sloth made his escape in a space rocket built into one of the towers of the city.

After Dr. Sloth escaped the [[Lost Desert]], an old experiment he had left on the Space Station - [[Neopet Version 2]] - awoke and took hostage several Neopets on vacation, in a lift. When the Neopian population wrote to Sloth, his reply briefly discussed how the NPv2 program could be deactivated, by acquiring the deactivation codes known to the program's original designers and the program itself. He didn't think the Neopians would actually be able to do it.

===Hannah and the Ice Caves===

A mock ending was made for [[Hannah and the Ice Caves (Plot)|Hannah and the Ice Caves]], where Dr. Sloth appeared and changed [[Hannah]] into a [[Mutant]], claiming revenge against her for cancelling his own plot - ''The Return of Doctor Sloth'', that would be revived four years later - in favour of hers. A few users were able to catch it before it was reverted to the true ending.

Dr. Sloth does not actually appear in the Tale of Woe, but while [[Sophie]] was testing potions on her pet [[Meowclops]], one of the results made it look, act and believe it was Dr. Sloth.

In 2008, Dr. Sloth distracted the [[Space Faerie]] with rumours of a disturbance in a distant part of space, and in her absence, began his return. [[Commander Garoo]] and his troop of [[Blumaroo]]s took over the Space Station, and took the civilians prisoner. They were to be sent away for mutation and recruitment into Dr. Sloth's army, but their prison transports were hijacked at the last minute by [[the Resistance]] - a group that had been founded following the [[Arrival of Virtupets]] plot to defend Neopia in the event of Dr. Sloth's return - and sent to safety.

Dr. Sloth and his scientists had been experimenting with the [[wikipedia:mutagenic|mutagenic]] properties of [[Kreludite]], planning to use it as a weapon. He manipulated the civil war between the [[Orange]] and [[Purple]] Grundos on Kreludor in order to secure his supply of the mineral, but after the Resistance united them by exposing [[Parlax]] as Dr. Sloth's agent, Dr. Sloth moved his battle fleet out to destroy the Orange and Purple factions.

Although the Grundos adapted their mining lasers as artillery against the battleships, they were severely outmatched by the armada, and would have been sorely defeated if not for the actions of [[Gorix]] and [[Cylara]]. They managed to sneak on board Dr. Sloth's own ship and get to the [[Space Faerie]]'s token, which Dr. Sloth had acquired in his first conflict with the [[faerie]]. [[Commander Gormos]], who had become dissatisfied with Dr. Sloth reducing him to an errand boy instead of sending him to the front lines, let the two Resistance members past to Dr. Sloth's atrium, where, using an incantation the Space Faerie had told her, Cylara was able to trap the doctor in the token. His ship's self-destruct sequence activated automatically, and after the explosion the token imprisoning the evil mastermind drifted silently through space.

'''Lord Kass''' was an [[Eyrie]] former general in the army of [[Lord Darigan]], who took over the rule of [[Darigan Citadel]] after Darigan disappeared after the [[Champions of Meridell]] [[plot]]. After becoming the Lord of the Citadel, he managed to convince his people to go to war with [[Meridell]] again through an extensive [[wikipedia:Propaganda|propaganda]] campaign. He was the main antagonist during the Battle for Meridell plot.

After the Spectre of Lord Darigan was destroyed and Darigan disappeared, Kass was contacted by [[The Three]] who encouraged him to take power and succeed where Lord Darigan failed. Corrupted by the ghostly apparitions, General Kass bribed and threatened his way to power in Darigan's stead. Ardent supporters of Darigan who opposed Kass' rise to power were charged with treason and disposed of - [[Master Vex]] was locked in his own dungeon, and [[Galgarroth]] was chained up and thrown from the floating fortress.

After General Kass had gained enough support in the Citadel to claim he was Lord, he managed to convince his people [[King Skarl]] was ready to attack them. He suggested war, and, after his disinformation drive, received the support of his people and begun the invasion.

During this time, Lord Kass' dreams were haunted by The Three, who claimed he wasn't strong enough, and would take away his power if he wasn't greedy enough to use it, to which Lord Kass begged they don't take it away.

Soon after, Lord Kass sent a dancer to [[King Skarl]], the daughter of the enchantress [[Morguss]], [[The Court Dancer]]. With her dance she hypnotized King Skarl along with his subjects. [[Jeran]]'s army in the field was left unsupported. After the Court Dancer's spell was broken, Meridell launched a counter attack, sending forces to meet the oncoming waves on the ground as well as sending Jeran to lead a force to fly in against the Citadel itself.

Atop the Citadel, Lord Kass trapped [[Morris]] and [[Count Boris]] in a corner, but was stopped by Jeran. Kass quickly disposed of him and threw him off the edge of the fortress, and was immediately attacked by returned [[Lord Darigan]]. After a duel with Darigan, Lord Kass fled deeper into the Citadel, and was taken in an explosion of magic by The Three in revenge for his failure.

Lord Darigan became obsessed with retrieving the orb for his people, and with his lieutenant [[Galgarroth]] raised an army for what would be the First Meridell-Darigan War.

Darigan Citadel was victorious and Meridell was sacked, and the power of the orb and the manipulations of the [[The Three]] corrupted Lord Darigan, turning him into the ''Spectre of Lord Darigan''. '''Battle for Meridell''' was a [[Plot]] on [[Neopets]] which took place between February 2, 2004 and May 13, 2004. [[Lord Kass]] bred unrest within the ranks of his people and started a war against [[Meridell]], violating their peace treaty in the process, in an attempt to satisfy [[The Three]].

==Plot Summary==
===Lord Kass' takeover===
After [[Lord Darigan]]'s fall from [[Champions of Meridell|power]], Lord Kass, a general at the time, began to gain power and influence in the [[Darigan|Citadel]], by bribing, intimidating and blackmailing a number of important or otherwise influential people (his diagrammatic plan would imply at least eight), including a captain, two chairman, a mayor, constable, judge, sheriff, prison keeper [[Master Vex]], and [[Galgarroth|General Galgarroth]] (interestingly misspelled by Lord Kass). Those who did not swear fealty to him were disposed of: Master Vex was [http://neopets.com/tcg/displayCard.phtml?edid=2&id=126 locked in his own dungeons] and General Galgarroth was chained up and tossed from the Citadel during one of Kass', now as Lord of the Citadel, speeches to the public.

During this time, Lord Darigan, who after his defeat had gone fully insane, and regressed to an animalistic creature who stalked Meridell's farms in search of food.

===The plans for war===
In an open-air speech to his public, Lord Kass, after a propaganda campaign portraying himself as a beloved leader and [[King Skarl]] as a hater of the people of Darigan/Kass Citadel, said that people were willing to attack them "in the name of King Skarl", while in fact Meridell had no intention to attack. He called upon his people to tell him what to do, and the crowd responded, "War!" and "Attack him first!"

At some point in this time, Kass must have engaged the support of an enchantress, the hag [[Morguss]] who's magic would prove vital in the ensuing war. Morguss' magic may [http://www.neopets.com/evil/showcreature.phtml?pos=17 have served Lord Darigan], possibly encouraging Lord Kass to enlist him.

Lord Kass sent [[The Court Dancer|Morguss' daughter]], an Aisha who portrayed the illusion of being beautiful, to King Skarl to capture him and his courtiers in a hypnotic dance. He had also seeded Meridell Castle with [http://neopets.com/tcg/displayCard.phtml?edid=2&id=85 spies] and Morguss set a [http://neopets.com/tcg/displayCard.phtml?edid=2&id=120 blight spell] on Meridell's crops.

By this time, Lord Darigan had set himself up in a barn of one of the Meridellian farms, where the young Usul daughter of the farmer, [[Sally (BfM)|Sally]], brought him, or ''Mr. Scary'' as she called him, scraps and leftovers.

===Kass' invasion===
While King Skarl was mesmerised by the dance of the Court Dancer, Lord Kass started his offensive. [[Jeran]], Champion of Meridell, and his relatively small troop, were the only force in the vicinity, and his calls for reinforcements and supplies were ignored by Skarl, who, thanks to the Court Dancer, was indisposed. The Court Dancer did find time, however, between her performances for the King, to [http://neopets.com/tcg/displayCard.phtml?edid=2&id=93 hypnotise the villagers] from the area of the attack to revolt against the military force there.

By Jeran's account, the first encountering of Kass' forces could have been no more than a days travel away from ''Hope River Village'', or possibly at it. The day after, the force was seen again, featuring several of Kass' [[war machine]]s, a type of weapon that Kass would be famous for introducing. By Jeran's reaction, this was an imposing sight, and may have been a larger force than that which was encountered the previous night.

As the Kass attack pressed on, in its early stages a small party raiding party attacked a farmhouse: by coincidence, this was the same farmhouse that the creature Lord Darigan had become had taken up refuge. Sally rushed to the barn to tell "Mr. Scary" that they had to run, when the party swooped on her, and a [[Skeith]] grabbed her. Darigan swept forward, and with ease beat off the Skeith. The other three soldiers looked on, stunned. One of them called questioningly to him, "Darigan?" before Darigan charged forward and effortless defeated the remaining members of the party, but his old name haunted him, and he was in an almost trance-like state before Sally spoke to him, at which point he appeared to fully remember himself. He said that he had to go, before flying off towards the Citadel.

As Kass' war machines pressed onwards with little resistance, [[Lisha]] suddenly snapped out of the Court Dancer's trance. She realised what was happening and rushed to the library to retrieve a copy of ''Imry Infilson's Index of Illusions''. She hurried back to the throne room, and enchanted a counter-spell, and the Court Dancer's spell, and her disguise, collapsed. As King Skarl suddenly came to himself, he ordered that the Court Dancer be arrested, and a soldier burst in to tell Skarl of the invasion. He immediately instructed his generals to the war room.

===Meridell's counterattack===
A royal summons was immediately sent out, calling to arms men and women from across the kingdom. With the army swelled, Skarl sent about concocting a counter offensive.

The plan involved a two-pronged attack. [[Kayla]]'s new concoction, an enlarging potion which impressed King Skarl, would be used to supersize [[Turtum]]s, and these would be equipped with catapults on the top of their shells and manned with a squad of troops to combat Kass' war machines on the ground - the front for the ground war appeared to be closing on Meridell Castle rapidly. Just as the ground offensive got underway, Jeran would lead a team of soldiers, riding [[Uni]]-back, through the air to assault the Citadel itself.

Jeran's attack met heavy rain on their approach to the Citadel, and the turbulent weather may have made things difficult where it not for the [[Air Faerie|Air]] [[Faerie]] [[Psellia]], who cleared the sky for them. While the Meridellian line met the oncoming invaders, Lord Kass was receiving information that the army was in full retreat and that Skarl had ordered all troops south. It is uncertain whether the [[Zafara Double Agent]] was triple crossing Kass, as her [[TCG|Trading Card]] [http://neopets.com/tcg/displayCard.phtml?edid=2&id=59 suggests], and giving him false information, or another agent gave Kass the false information which the Zafara Double Agent corrects (it is likely the former as he still seems happy with himself after the frame in the plot where she appears), but in spite of the news of his army's success, or perhaps because of it, he ordered Morguss to shower [[Nova]]s down on the battlefield as Jeran's force slip into the citadel.

However, Kass, despite only having a skeleton force with him, seemed prepared enough to take on Jeran's sneak attack. Several fireballs were launched from the Citadel at the invaders, and Lord Kass himself joined the attack. Engaging Jeran, he forced him Jeran off the edge of the floating rock, and was about to dispatch the remnants of Jeran's invasion force when Lord Darigan arrived on scene.

===Lord Darigan's return===
Lord Darigan, armed with a clawed staff and wearing no armour, drops onto the citadel and confronts Lord Kass. He turned, stunned that Darigan was still alive. "Dead?" he replied, "I thought I was dead too."

The two Lords fight, and Kass began to gain the upper hand as he pressed Darigan back into a wall, and caught his shoulder with his blade. The tide not just of the war, but of Kass' own engagement began to turn against him, however, and Darigan soon caused Kass to fall to the floor, narrowly missing a swing of Darigan's staff. The amulet around Kass' neck shattered against the Citadel's floor, and to his horror, as he hits the ground, his connection to The Three died with it.

Darigan offered his hand to the fallen [[Eyrie]], telling him that The Three could control him no more. However, they approach, in gaseous spectral forms, and Kass fled. They perused him, and decided to take from Kass all he promised them - everything.

Lord Darigan, having defeated Kass, rushed to the Engine Room to prevent the Citadel from falling. Kass' troops surrendered to their old Lord, and they and the Meridellians helped him to restore the failing engines.

The Three, having dealt with Kass, approached Darigan in their spectral guises, who presumably were responsible for his attack of Meridell before his fall from power. They said to him that he will eventually return to them, but Darigan denied it. The Three vanished.

After the war, Jeran was returned by Psellia, who takes him to Skarl. Jeran mades a recovery, apparently saved from his fall by the Air Faerie.

Users participated in the plot by fighting back against the army of Lord Kass. Challengers were fought in the [[Battledome]] and were released as the war progressed, with a limited number of each opponent to defeat.

Eventually, Lord Kass himself came into battle, having a total hit points of 10,000 along with a collection of [[Battledome Equipment]] which made it impossible for any user to defeat him on their own. He could only be defeated with the collective effort of users, as his total HP was lowered by how much damage they could fully do on each match. the final blow was eventually given by [http://www.neopets.com/userlookup.phtml?user=garet_jaxx garet_jaxx], and all battles were soon halted there after.
