edit: is there any strategy for this dang game?!
The only strategy that I know of is to avoid dead ends if you can so that you don't have to backtrack. An exception is if the item is in the dead end. Mainly take a step and look all around to see if you see the item. Then take another step and look all around.
I think that whether the item is hard to find is random. I happened to have an easy find- about 20 steps, but player can relax about it because you don't have to save enough steps to work yourself out again. You just need to find it, and you can escape.
Gosh I hate Fetch! But I found my book and everything's all good. The pace of this plot is very good, in my opinion. And Gilly is growing on me. =P Oh her innocence! I absolutely...not hate her anymore! And I swear if I have to see that goshdarned caretaker in ANOTHER plot....-_-
no strategy but realize that we only need to find the books. we don't have to find the exit.. we are given 160 steps?... I died once.. but just keep trying.. . be sure to look over the whole image for the book...
random clickers.. you should be in your glory.. maps truely are a waste of time here.
btw ggagahc, you are a woman after my own heart. You have eloquently expressed my goshdarn feeling about seeing another Yurble worker.
Yurbles of the Neopia Unite.. You should be heros too.

the best advice that I can give for fetch is once you spot the books, keep an eye on thier position relative to yours in the maze...even if they're off the screen. keeps you from having to circle back as much.

I'm playing fetch and the page keeps refreshing all by itself after I make my move. It's pretty annoying and is taking longer to finish, obviously. Does this happen normally with this game; it's so odd.
