Based on my above post (uh, post in the prior thread since it was so long, sorries), after mulling this over for a couple days, I think the Hoban's threat; and Linae's repetitive comments about Hoban being bad luck; and Hoban's hat have something 'in common' and that they are sort of invisible clues. Not so much red herrings to distract, but indeed consistencies that make almost no sense and might be better omitted? o_O

Who pushed Hoban? Bonju (on accident; despite his hat-coveting he has heart)

When did he fall? 6:00 (Hoban was witnessed at end of storm; someone else had to mark their re-route to Krawk Island after his disappearance)

Where on the ship did he fall? cargo crates (at end of storm, rockiest moments, supplies overboard, Chef standing next to Hoban with pointy knife)

Where is Hoban now? G14 (Hoban marked it last, probably before dinner and the storm, but definately before the next mark someone else had to make since Hoban was not around to mark the re-route to Krawk Island)

Do you like Hoban's hat? (scary how long even *i* had to think about this and still can't come to a definite conclusion)

the text above the grid map should say: "t looks like... a grid of some kind, though your character is too stupid to ask anyone what it might be good for. Better luck next time skippy!"

I dont even think "G19" is a possibility, because there arent enough verticle lines on the chart to go exactly from A-Z... that CANT be just a coincidence.... and because then a few of the coordinates would line up with X's... which would line up with an island, which is a location. Krawk island. Which then brings be to believe G19 is almost a red herring in the list of possible answers.

The rows are lettered A-I and the columns are numbered 1-25.

All the co-ordinates are possible. :)

The maps I think we tell us where Hoban is, but I am not too sure how to work with both maps.

I believe the gridmap was the "intended" journey - ending at Mystery Island. The red X that is above the line, is where the storm hit.

On the map on the desk, it shows that the ship had to go to Krawk Island (because of the storm).

EDIT:

After looking again (actually, numerous times) at the map posted on a previous post, I think it is wrong. The overlayed maps don't make sense in that order. But that is only my opinion. :)

This is the way I interpret the "grid" vs. "map":

The X on the map indicates someone had to draw in where they went off course and had to re-route to Krawk Island. Therefore, it could only have been written after the storm.

The grid shows their expected course overall. The last 3-4 points are perhaps of the greatest concern. G19 is the X on the map, after the storm, they went off track (again I am assuming/envisioning all of this). The point after that is where they are now, the point before that is before the storm, thus the last time Hoban himself in person could have marked it.

If you want to speculate drifting, be my guest, but I am assuming TNT is using crude "multiple choice" for a reason, and since we have some times but no distance or velocity or speed, I do not see how they would expect us to extrapolate even that far. But I could be wrong or some people speculate the answers do not matter and it is all a silly distraction. o_O

EDIT: We posted at almost the same time, but after I read you I tend to agree with you Daze. If you have any afterthoughts I would love to hear them.

Maybe the above-the-line x on the grid and the red x on the map are the same x... that would work if you overlap them, as the intended course (on the grid) would hit MI if you kept following the arrow, and the detour on the map would take you down to KI. Does that make sense? ;)

Fri Sep 01, 2006 2:02 am

:D Yeah, Cranberry that is what I intended to represent in my above post. Thanks for actually elaborating what I was "envisioning" but having a hard time "literating" (lol).

Ok, thanks to your post Anjuna - I have made this:

Image

Is this correct in what you where thinking? :)

Fri Sep 01, 2006 2:09 am

That is what we were thinking, Daze!

So if that is correct, the detour at G19 would have been drawn after the storm, when the Captain said they had to go to KI because they'd never make it to MI in that condition. But Hoban was long gone by that point, so who drew it on? And do the xs actually correspond to times at all?

Fri Sep 01, 2006 2:12 am

Interpretation: Using wind power to go to MI per red primary line. Storm hits at G19. Instantly blown off course to end of red secondary line. Storm ends at red second circle. Using wind power to go to KI along dotted line. Winds prevailing at this time are vaguely pointing toward I22, where if Hoban floated, he may have floated to. No Xs appear to correlate remotely with landmasses.

Fri Sep 01, 2006 2:22 am

Hmm, that makes a whole lot of sense, if you ask me. More than any of the character's stories at least. o_O

Plus, I like your theory because I guessed I22 and really would like to be right. Heh.

Fri Sep 01, 2006 2:23 am

Makes sense to me... okay, I'm gonna repeat some stuff just to get it straight in my head:

Image

If you follow the graph line with all the xs, which seems to be the original course, they'd end up at MI as planned. Plagatus suggests the storm hit at G19 (the above-the-line, overlapped x) and the ship was blown to that second red circle. From there they had to use wind power to make it to the close KI (along the dotted line). Hoban would have drifted the same direction as the ship, but a bit higher on the map (because he fell off earlier), probably ending up around I22.

Fri Sep 01, 2006 2:24 am

Yeah, Daze and Cranberry, that is what I drew here in pencil myself here seems like days ago now lol. I tried to get it into Paint or Photoshop, but as mediocre as my skills are I could not convert the image and overlap and do all those steps you so easily just did, so thanks! :)

So based on that I think that "during" the storm Hoban could not or would not be running around rushing to plot a "during a storm" location. He was seen all around on deck mostly sulking, so I think he made the ones prior to the re-route to Krawk Island and the others had to be made by someone else. It almost doesn't matter but I suspect Anshu or Captain/Shumi, in other words someone in charge or someone documenting a course that planned to alter it in the first place (Anshu's motive, though somehow I do not suspect him the "criminal" for some reason).

EDIT: Okay, you guys did extrapolate a little further. I am not so sure that is the intention of the map, and I don't think the ship's course is meant to indicate where Hoban is now, but I could be way wrong. Hmmm.

Yeah, something about that doesn't make sense. If they already went to KI and Hoban drifted toward where they are now on MI, wouldn't they have hopefully seen him? Or has the whodunnit gone too far now? The multiple choice crude nature of this drives me mad, lol. I think the last X on the grid is where the ship was last, just before they landed where they are now. Where we are now (in the plot).

I am glad we were thinking along the same lines. :)

Maybe it is as easy as Hoban is at the Krawk Islands.

Anyway, I am giving it a break for a while.

Fri Sep 01, 2006 2:45 am

Agreed, I sort of think/hope Hoban is floating on a crate safely near Krawk Island, since "my character" (nor my personal clicking) has not found him on the Island itself. But I still am in awe at the decision of the Captain to search "all over Neopia" (almost) instead of, like, the last place they remember spotting Hoban. (Uh, like, during a storm perhaps?)

Or he died and drifted somewhere near Maraqua, and the statue of the Darkest Faerie at the bottom of the ruins will come to life to bring Hoban back and give us all some Altador plot prizes!

No, TNT, we have not forgotten.

EDIT: But so I hear, when people post their guess, it says "check back in a few days" so I wonder how long people can submit and if that is even true (knowing how TNT is so prompt in handing out rewards)?

I don't know how either Anshu or Bonju could have done it. They were both discussing who was arguing with Hoban at 5:00. They couldn't make out who it was - I'm thinking it was the person who pushed him overboard. In the last screen of Linae's story, you see him with Hoban. Doesn't that make Linae the pusher?
