Orrin was locked in the hold, and couldn't tell anyone anything until Shumi let him out. Orrin told the captain what he'd seen and heard as soon as he got on deck.
I'm starting to think in terms of logic-puzzle meets whodunit. It's too soon to tell, but I suspect we'll be comparing the stories of each crewmember, and using the inconsistencies to narrow things down.
Not relevant to the plot, but I just noticed that the text in the title background for Culinary Concoctions is "bork bork", which amuses greatly.

I think the last two *'s you're missing are "es", so that makes "*****esforbetterheal(ing)"

I doubt its part of the plot but yes mystery island does seem fuzzier.
