No, its the dictionary definition of a geek. Nyah!

not according to mine it isnt, wouldnt happen to be dictionary.com would it?
because plenty of people add false meanings, and sometimes they get through.

Here we go.

A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

geeky adj.
Our Living Language Our word geek is now chiefly associated with student and computer slang; one probably thinks first of a computer geek.

That was the definition I was going for, worded much better by dictionary.com.

From the same website-
nerd

n. 1. [mainstream slang] Pejorative applied to anyone
with an above-average IQ and few gifts at small talk and ordinary
social rituals

It's only one of the definitions provided at dictionary.com.

...In origin, however, it is one of the words American English borrowed from the vocabulary of the circus, which was a much more significant source of entertainment in the United States in the 19th and early 20th century than it is now...

In my school (Its a middle school 6th grade to 8th grade) people usually call nerds those who are smart, unattractive and also weird. I'm not sure if it's the right defenition, but a lot of people seem to think that way.

Beat me to the definitions...oh well...I find the word, techinically both mean about the same thing of what I see.

Nerds are intelligent, kind of shy people. Nerds are hot. <3

That's pretty much my definition of the two. People at my school don't really use those words.

Oh, I never call people names or anything unless they do something totally mean to me or someone else to deserve it, so I never use those words unless in jest with friends. :P

"Geek" and "nerd" are a sign of honor to me. I'm weird, though...

*nods*

I always thought a nerd was someone who was book smart, and knew a lot about useful things.

A geek was something specific, like band geek for instance. (Yeah, I'm totally just pulling that out of no where...lol. ) Band geeks really like being in band, and it takes up a lot of their time.

I am proud to be both. :D

Geek: Rare mega insult used to describe me.
Nerd: Frequent middling insult used to describe me.
(I add I personally don't think either apply well.)

Dictionary.com definitions:

Geek
- A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy
- A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept

Nerd
- A foolish, inept, or unattractive person
- A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept

I don't call people nerds or geeks, so I don't have my own definition. But by popular definition in my school, I'm a big nerd and I'm proud :D

Mon Jul 19, 2004 4:33 pm

Geek: A usually secluded person, who is often very intelligent and unappreciated. Tends to obsess over things, and might not be the perfect student but gets good grades.

Nerd: Mostly the same, but gets all good grades, makes inventions, and tends to obsess with Star Trek and stuff. Also tends to have less friends.

When I think of a geek, I think of a computer geek, but it can also mean someone who's just knowledgeable and specialized in any area. For nerd, I think of someone who studies a lot and is especially into math and science.

Mon Jul 19, 2004 7:13 pm

Geek: Someone who spends 24/7 on a computer and obsesses over games like Counter-Strike.
Nerd: Someone at school who is too smart and needs to go to a school for their kind of people instead of rubbing it in our faces how smart they are.
