Another thought: I always thought that "Meerca" was a play on words of the meercat. Even though meercats don't have long tails, they stretch to have their heads as high as possible when looking out for predators.

Actually, I know what you mean. O_o Maybe not Goodman, but the Yurble always reminded me of someone large and friendly. Maybe Rubeus Hagrid?
And I think the Ogrin resembles a zebra slightly more than a giraffe.
I'll add to this list later, when I'm not supposed to be studying for two tests.

Okay, I need to get something off my chest here:
The Ruki is ONLY a mantis. Why do people insist it's an ant or mantis/ant hybrid? It has the wings of a mantis, simplified arms of a mantis, and entire body arrangement of a mantis.
The only similarity it has to an ant is the fact that ants are such generic-looking insects that almost any overly cartoonified insect can pass for one.
But then there's the fact that Donna specifically said it was mantis-based.
