No, (Solid) Snake wasn't. Big Boss was. Apparently. As Snake himself didn't even show up until Metal Gear 1, which is after Metal Gear Solid 3. Because Big Boss (or Naked Snake) looses his eye, and Solid Snake can't techinically exist yet, because they haven't done the Genome therapy.

-Edit!!

According to Wikipedia information on Big Boss [located Here] The Genome Project and Les Enfant Terrible began in 1972.

Well, don't i feel stupid.

Either way, i still say there had to be some sort of genetic testing going on in the early 1900's. Perhaps it had something to do with the World wars at that time? :o

According to what I've read, they didn't actually start the genetic testing on Big Boss until 1972. While they may have done something before that, it wasn't recorded in what all I read.

The thing to remember when talking about Metal Gear, is that Metal Gear Solid 2 takes place in late 2007-2009. Not 2001, like the year it came out.

Great. He just HAD to confuse us with all these timelines. *sigh* As long as some sense can be made from the final product, i'll be happy. That's what upsets me the most. Having a good story to begin with, then butchering it by messing with the timeline. *fingers crossed* :P

Kojima is a genius when it comes to doing something totally odd to confuse the people. (Such as the "Streaking Missions" in Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance.)
