I'm still wondering how everyone missed an entire new species. There must have been some sign of it.

How could there be? It's exactly the same situation as when there are new petpets, if we don't know the species name (which we don't with new species) then there is no way to url fiddle to look for them. Colours are easy, front page images, backgrounds, shopkeers, captions and items are all easy - new pet/petpet species are impossible.

The next expansion for the Neopets TCG, Travels of Neopia, has been announced for release in Feburary. Basically it's nothing new, just a "best of" set from the previous expansions.

Great, when WOC does this it usually means it's time for those sets to become illegal in gameplay, such as in Pokemon and Magic.
(Not that I play the game, as they don't sell it here for some stupid reason, and I'm not paying import prices, but still)

Some petpets are named by number, so it easy to find them.
In the last new pets, there was a clue in the siteNT/Caption contest

Ummmm.
Older sets of Magic become 'Illegal' Only in Type 2 (albeit the main Tournament scene) to stop the gameplay from stagnating.
(woo! Tooth And Nail is gone!)
As for Poke'mon, older sets became 'Illegal' (again, never seen it actually enforced) because Nintendo decided that Wizards werent paying enough attention to the card game (which they werent) and bought it back inhouse.
