Not as realiable at freezing, but if you are using the DoN strategy of withdrawing if you don't freeze him on the first attempt, then I suppose they would be fine.
I also remember sink, burrow and drain life were recommended as good abilities to have if you pet has the level for them.

Yeah, my Snowglobe Staff got melted on 1st try, and my Frost Cannon did nothing much either. I did find ironically that Supersize! actually works to buffer some of the Spirits blows, such that I was not knocked out on his first hit. After a dozen loses, weak pet and no sense of strategy, no patience on my part, and re-relalizing the futility of the "war" (in my opinion) I basically am giving up this part (waiting on more puzzles).

Nor any evidence that the war has even started, nor anything to say that other, weaker opponents aren't coming along later. I would have thought that everyone would have an opportunity to participate in each phase of this plot, in the same way that BD fans had the ooportunity to help shifting furniture then surely the grafters of that phase will have an opportunity to get points from the fighting should they so choose?

Well, we didn't really get to see any evidence that the furniture moving and the other puzzles gave us some points eitherSo my guess is that this is just another little piece of the plot. You can choose whether to participate in it or not, but according to what Donna said in that illustrious editorial, points should be rewarded for every little bit of time and effort you put into the plot...
TNT hasn't made any formal announcement for any other plot related clues/puzzles/tasks, they have left it all up to us to find out what to do next.
Here is a excerpt from an Editorial:
Basically rather than just having a war to decide who gets what, there will be many puzzles, many fights and some other challenges for you to do in order to earn points.
It states - many fights. I believe this means that the fighting and puzzles will work along side each other for this plot.
Also you can find this in the Battledome news:
Monday 17th October
There are monsters everywhere! A mean spirit that lives in the ruins and a two headed Scorchio called Scordrax burning down Sahkmet. Can you help?!? Will you fight?!?
And this is on the Front Page of the Battledome:
Sahkmet is under ATTACK!!!
Sakhmet is being burned down by the two headed Scorchio and the ruins have a spirit that isn't too friendly! Can you help them? If you are brave enough, go to the Battledome and fight!
TNT have given us enough encouragement to fight the challengers, so it seems this is the "war" - small battles rather than an all-out assault.

Well, hopefully someone will figure out this mess and get Sakhmet back to normal so those Kadoaties can be fed.

What if the other dimension Sahkmet was in is the dimension of THE FUTURE?! Sahkmet could be trapped one day in the future!
Can you tell that I'm suffering from material-deprivation?

Actually, 'the future dimension' would just be one where 'time' flows 'faster' than in this reality. That is not too far fetched since time is the only linear aspect of space-time. (X, Y, and Z are all planer). Make time planer and one of the other dimensions linear and you're ready for fun. Or make time planer as well as other know dimensions, make a new dimension linear, and we're ready for some fun!
