I think they just changed it, my pets are level 27, 24, 21, 19 and up until yesterday I could fish every four hours. Yesterday I could only fish once but I'm wondering whether the limit is now once per day or some other large time scale.
I'm guessing if you can't catch anything after 12 hours then fishing has been turned into a once per day daily :|
As for the squid it's the Titanic Giant Squid that appears on the avatar so the theory goes that you have to catch that one

1st pet -level raise to 20
2nd pet, rusty can - no level raise
3rd pet- no level raise
4th pet level raise to 19
My pets can't seem to get anything outside of junk items

The times I can fish still seem pretty random. I usually end up fishing six to nine hours after I last did, and at least a couple of my pets normally catch something. Today I waited nine hours between fishing times, and all four of my pets caught stuff (and three of the four got a level-up). They're now at levels 24, 21, 21 and 22.

I don't seem to be able to fish any less than 12 hours apart. And having 4 pets, every time I can fish, only 3 out of the 4 can actually fish. Been getting alot of "junk" with no level increases lately too.

heh ive been only fishing like once every 2-3 days. my highest pet is level 10 now, and my lowest is 7. i got a long way to go...

Well I know I definitely can't fish successfully after 4 hours, yesterday I managed after 9 hours. I'm still kinda confused over how long I should wait :|
My pets levels are now 20, 21, 25 and 27 and are all catching nice stuff though so that's cool

I fish approximately once every 24 hours and have never had a problem with my pets not catching anything.

Well yeah you could leave it every 24 hours but after 9 hours all my pets catch something so I don't think it's necessary to wait so long, you'd miss out on a lot of level ups I'd think

I have tried to fish several times a day but from day one it wouldn't let me catch anything but once a day that is why i'm only at 18 and you guys are above 20.
