i screencapped all i saw havent seen steroids one yet as for under 13. I'm getting these while NOT logged in at all. which kinda says its a general ad spinner and when i look at the links nad all nothing is set up to filter anything so under 13s will see as well. there are NO neopets ads in teh bottom one since its all run by double click a notorious cookie dropper. 3 of the ads lead to spyware land. I'm a premium user and even without seeing hte ads myself as a play i know of quite a few younger children who dont need to end up at these kinda sites. :(

I just set my language to Spanish, and i see no ads. Good thing I can read most of it. *va a leer las noticias*

EDIT: Ah, senor "Donut"* no entiende espanol? Que bien, para mi. (can't do accents)

*Dohring. Dough-ring. Donut. Get it? (I'm aware that's not the proper spelling of "doughnut", it's just the most widely used.)

Alas, I have gone from Canadian (well, Chinese) to French Canadian. Good way to practice for class. :P

Guess I'll be staying on the site for awhile longer...unless they start putting French ads.

Sun Feb 13, 2005 2:24 am

This is reason number 2 to learn Portuguese for me.

Sun Feb 13, 2005 2:27 am

heh, thank goodness my french is good. if the new ads come onto the other languages I'm quitting. pfft. the ads just ruin the *little bubble of neopia*, you know? the escapist factor is what I guess I mean. it's impossible to get absorbed in the game when yr being offered ipod scams every two seconds.

You know what? I'm surprised that I'm the only person here who has considered another Day of Action to try and bring the big executive hotshots up to speed with how great their cash-cow is doing. I mean, I'm reading about all these people wanting to quit, but I reckon that instead of doing that, we could just have another DoA.

What do you all think? Petitions, complaints and quits can only go so far. A publicised Day of Action can cause a big bang, if it's executed properly. I'm just waiting for TNT's official announcement before doing anything drastic.

Banner Update - You may have noticed a new banner at the bottom of some pages. Please bear with us during this experimental phase as we are trying to do what is best for the site. With that in mind, these new banners should not make the page load any slower for you and are placed at the bottom of the page so you can browse the site as normal. Rest assured no banners will appear on your userlookups!

That statement? =/

i'd be down for that, i'm just wondering if it could be large-scale enough to do anything

Ahh but thats still an 'experimental' stage. They might, for all I know, get rid of the top banner and replace it with the bottom one. That, would be excellent, and I'll have no problem. Combining the two however will get me really angry. Very angry. So I'm waiting for the big-real-major announcement here

And vinylraven, the last DoA was okay, but I only heard about it a week after it happened. I mean, it wasn't big enough. Something bigger is needed. Maybe even more than one day....

day-of-action would be ignored by the zillions of newbies & wasn't the last one really quite ineffectual? petitions are pretty pointless since it's hard to prove that one person isn't signing a zillion times. angry-but-polite-letter-writing seems like the best idea to me. if everyone wrote one email explaining how bad these ads they would have to listen. it's active at least, as opposed to the day-of-action which was just staying off neo, right? thats too passive to be effective.

Hehe, it'll be funny if we create a new chainletter.

Send this to TNT and ten of your friends! (Dont send this part)

Dear TNT, the banner ads at the bottom are horrible!
Blah blah blah.. you know the rest. ;)

Hmm.. I wonder if this thread is gong to make it to a second split?

Sun Feb 13, 2005 3:17 am

I'm still trying to figure out how the heck to send a complaint... The stupid form under the 'ad complaint' thing is confusing. o__O
Last night, right before bed (when I do my best thinking >.<; ) I figured out what to say in an 'angry but polite' letter but I don't know how to send it to them. >__<

hmmm not good.

Isnt Neo meant to be a "Coppa" Compliant site for children?

I wouldnt think that ads for illegal drugs ( steriods) would comply...

Is it worth bringing them ( Coppa) into it?

Just a thought, since the ads that are coming up are CLEARLY not for children.

SS:)

EDIT: From Neos Own privacy policy
http://www.neopets.com/privacy.phtml

To this end, we ensure that our privacy policy and our information practices adhere to the U.S. Department of Commerce's Safe Harbor Principles. Because many of the visitors to this site are children, we take care that our content is suitable for children.

I would say that someone has made a big mistake in putting those ads there , as they clearly contravene their own privacy policy.....

As a parent with children using the site, I am disgusted with the content of these ads, Illegal drugs is just gone way too far, and as far as pregancy, male enhancement and Birth Control goes, the girls dont know the facts of life yet and I certainly dont want them learning that from the ads on Neopets.

Im so glad We arent seeing them, otherwise Id have to think about whether I let my 8 YOs play at all.

hmmm

Last time I checked, Neopets was supposed to be a child-friendly sight. Steroid ads and "Which person is going to get pregnant first?" ads aren't exactly what I call child-friendly. Yet Neopets for some reason fails to see this.

Hate the bottom ads. It's bad enough there's a huge image at the top of the screen.
