Lots of MSN Help

Tue Sep 09, 2008 9:12 pm

I just downloaded MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger/whatever and I have a few questions xD

I'm normally used to IMing people on AIM, so there is a big difference (at least a big difference from AIM Triton or w/e version they had 2-3 years ago). First, how can I eliminate those icons on the left side? I only plan on using a couple, if any, and all I can figure out is adjust their order :( Second, is my Live ID the same as my IM Address? (What are they even called?) If so, how can I change it? Third, can I somehow block all requests for contact info? Right when I signed up I apparently had some people requesting my info and I've never spoken to them in my life :x Finally, can I IM people/add people who don't use MSN? Like if I had a few friends using AIM, can I still add them and IM them?

That's it for now. I'm sure once these are answered I'll have some more :P

*signs in to MSN*

First, how can I eliminate those icons on the left side? Um, buy a Mac and then put MSN messenger on your Mac (the Mac version doesn't have all that crap). Other than that, there's no way that I know of to get rid of those icons.

Second, is my Live ID the same as my IM Address? Your Live ID is the same as your MSN log-in.

(What are they even called?) On my version of MSN messenger, it's just called "E-mail address".

If so, how can I change it? The only way that I know of to change your Windows Live ID is to create a new e-mail address to use with MSN/Windows Live. Within MSN Messenger, you can change the way your name is displayed. On my version, you just click on your name at the top of the screen and you can change it to whatever you want.

Third, can I somehow block all requests for contact info? Firstly, I suggest not having any of your contact information available (if you're referring to phone numbers and things like that). Second, go to your preferences window. There should be a privacy tab. You can select "Always alert me when I receive a message from an unknown sender" which means that if someone tries to message you and they aren't on your buddy list, you'll get a pop-up asking whether or not you want to accept their message. You can also select "Only users on my Allow List can see my status and send me messages. Block all other users." - You may want to select that second option if you don't want people contacting you that you don't know.

Finally, can I IM people/add people who don't use MSN? Not that I'm aware of. There may be other programs out there though that are capable of that.

I don't know what version of MSN/Windows Live Messenger I have, but I can hide tabs on mine. Go to Tools -> Options -> Tabs and select "Hide Tabs."

If you want to talk to AIM and MSN people using the same browser, www.meebo.com gives you the chance. :)

In general, you cannot rid yourself of the icons. They're here to stay.

However, you can get rid of the icons when you are talking to someone so that both of your icons don't show up. Just click the arrow pointing left in the top right hand side of the conversation window (just below all those other small icon/features).

Second, is my Live ID the same as my IM Address? (What are they even called?)

Well, your "Live ID" is the same as your MSN hotmail account. So yes.

And it's called your e-mail address or your Live ID. There isn't a difference.

If so, how can I change it?

Create a new e-mail.

Third, can I somehow block all requests for contact info? Right when I signed up I apparently had some people requesting my info and I've never spoken to them in my life :x

I've never understood that either, so it just says on mine, "You have 33 pending requests" and I don't even know how to answer them. If you leave it be, it won't give the person your information :)

can I IM people/add people who don't use MSN? Like if I had a few friends using AIM, can I still add them and IM them?

AIM e-mails do not work on MSN. Everything else pretty much does :)

Do you mean those little tabs on the left side? Or the display pic icons on the left side of the names? If, the display pic icons; I think you may be able to disable that function. Though, I don't know how to. It shows up on one of my MSN accounts, however it doesn't on another one of my MSN accounts. Same software, though.
