Annoying School Filters

Fri Mar 18, 2005 10:25 am

Okay, I'm sure that there are people here who have faced this issue before: school internet filters.

Now, before I get started, I don't want anyone thinking I'm on a journey to access dangerous or bad stuff on the net. I'm doing this for two reasons:

1. When we get 'free time' on the computers, there are NO interesting sites worth visiting that aren't blocked ("Humour", "Jokes" and "Fun" are amongst some of the filters' reasons for blocking certain sites)

2. Even for researching, image search is blocked on all major search engines, not to mention if I happen to be researching anything along the lines of games consoles, or games (hey, I had to once), then you can guess how much fun I have trying to find ways past this blasted filter.

3. It blocks Hotmail, Yahoo mail, Gmail, and virtually any mail service you can think of. Joy

Now, onto the details. The school is part of this SINA network. It provided students with their own web accounts, email, and webspace... and this filter. Now, these SINA buggers are smarter than the average filter service type people you meet (great description, thank you).

Now, I've found that if I type something in a foreign language, I can get into any type of website, no problems. It just won't let me translate the page (it says I'm tying to abuse a loophole). I've tried certain websites, like
megaproxy.com/freesurf
But my good friends at SINA are still too good, and know about this.

My school administrator has taken away any kind of computer privelages other than making Word Documents. Which means, I have no access to the Control Panel, I can't change most options on anything. Heck, I can't even right-click on the desktop!

What I'm asking is if anyone has some decent tips on getting past this filter, could they please post some help. Any ideas on what might work.

Just a quick warning: Your school has set up this filter for a reason, if you do start trying to get around the filter and the school finds out there is the possibility that you could lose all computer privileges (they used to do it at my old school).

Good luck notheless if you do try to get around it though :)

I'm not planning on using it for bad stuff. On the contrary, I just want to be able to do basic stuff like look up images for projects without a filter telling me I'm looking at pornography.

And don't worry, I'm like one of the 'good' students in the school, so catching me trying to avoid the filter will result in nothing more than a slap on the wrist. At least the first time around

Only thing I can help you with is the Gmail problem, someone told me how to get around it.

Instead of the usual address, go to https://gmail.google.com (there's an 's' added in). For some reason, filters aren't able to block it.

Well, at least that's one obstacle out of the way. At least now I'll be able to send more than one document at a time from school. The school mail system (which also happens to be run by SINA) labels your message as spam and refuses to send it if you have more than one attachment

wow that is utter bull crap. i know i could figure it out if i was there (and i can give u more options if this doesn't work).

I like it :)

nomorelimits.net
I have to remember that one. I have to wait till Tuesday though, before I get to go to the Computer Room again. But I'll try it out then.

I suppose your school network filters Neopets too? Mine does.

Yep :P And PPT. In fact, all message boards are blocked.

Really? My school filter doesn't block PPt or Neopets, but it does block all game realted websites, except one, called http://www.jengajam.com, try it out.

Anywho, yah, we can right-click on the destop and do all that stuff, I could completly ruin every computer in my school if I wanted to, imagine this, "Every student in St. James loses work" It would be priceless.

And, when image searchering, I can't help you, I typed in rainbows or clouds, or even my school name, and it blocks it for "Sex/Nudity"

let us know if it works, if not i have a few more "crude" methods of getting you administrative rights....

BTW my school lets you do anything except image search google. only problem is that it has a program called deepfreeze, which deletes anything that has changed on the comp on reboot. i have my school "hacking" experience from my old middle school (i even set upt a mock computer once at my house for testing!)

I had this problem to, and actually, ill admit ive been sneaking around the filters... (not to do anything bad, but sometimes you NEED to research diseases or use google image search or something, and it doesnt help when most of the websites are blocked because they have one bad word on the page somewhere, which might not even be in the bad context!) anyway, my brother and i developed a page that where you go to the webpage, and it makes a browser in the browser so you can go to a website THROUGH the website we made. I really dont want to give out the link, as i know for a fact this would get abused. 3 people and I use it. Thats it. but im just saying... if you know how to do this.... its a smart method. :) Try it out... schools never really figure it out!

Bad news, well sort of. I had computers today, but it was just a theory lesson :x So no computers as such. And I won't have computers until friday. And I was really looking forward to trying out a couple of these work-arounds :P

Hmmm, TWW, I was thinking about something like that, but problem is that I'm not the best HTML expert. Heck, I can just barely make a basic page :P I'd need to ask a few of my techie friends to help out, and maybe I can do just that.

Heh, time for some proxy sites.

http://www.unipeak.com
http://www.proxify.org
http://www.jayssite.com/web

Thats all I can think of at the moment. Try to use those sites discreetly because if you get caught actually typing stuff in you might get computer priveleges revoked.

"Oh! Not revoked!?"
"Yes, revoed."

That conversation is not a good one to have with the head of the IT department.

Mon Mar 21, 2005 9:03 am

Heheh, it'd be interesting having my computer privelages revoked, seeing as how every second lesson in computers I need to use the computer.

That's why I'm 99.9% certain that the first time I'm caught, it'll be a simple slap in the wrist. It's that 0.1% that I'm worried about though
