Taking Rivalry a little too far?

Sun Dec 07, 2008 11:21 am

There is a long standing rivalry between the Brits and the Aussies when it comes to sport, the Ashes, the Rugby... both countries are always trying to beat the other, and will rub their noses in it when they do!

After getting a higher medal tally than the aussies at the Bejing olympics, the sun newspaper from the UK commissioned a "where the bloody hell were you?" ad that was driven around sydney (see here http://commercial-archive.com/node/145405 and http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/no ... dvertising ). This add was a rip-off of the 'where the bloody hell are you?" tourism campaign that the australian government ran back in 2006.

Well now the aussies have struck back with their own micky-taking advert. You can watch it here: http://videohosting.ausport.gov.au/

Do you think that it's all going a bit too far? or is it all just a bit of harmless fun?

I always thought the 'Where the bloody hell are you' ads were one of the worst conceived loads of bollocks ever. It sounds so BAD. I mean, you can say it, but not in a perky advertising female tone of voice.

Oh come on, please. It's just stupid. The whole Brits-v.-Aussies thing was fine, but that's too much. It's just plain silly now.

I see it as the whole school rivalry thing.

In sports it seems to be a marketing gimmick --> playing on one's own team loyalty, but bringing it into the national atmosphere to make it feel like "if you don't support your team when it's our country vs. another, then you're not fulfilling your duties as a citizen" type thing.

The Sun sits on the lowest rungs. What more could you expect? *sighs*

Give them a break, it's nothing but sport. I find it fun.

What does this mean? I'm having difficulty understanding. The sun "sits" or "sets"?

Sits.

As in it's more a comic than a newspaper.

At least they know it though. The Daily Mail on the other hand...

EDIT: Personally, I think it's funny. I like how we have a good relationship with Austrailia and can poke fun of each other (and ourselves). It's a well known fact that Austrailia can kick us down in pretty much every major sport.
