ULTIMATE FRISBEE

Mon Apr 10, 2006 9:32 am

Best.Game.Ever.

I recently discovered ultimate frisbee as a sport, and seeing as everyone who does sports goes off and plays AFL or somethign around here, i'm actually one of the top players in a game, so I really enjoy it.

I demand to know as much as possible about Ultimate Frisbee! I hear its big in the states...

Oh! That is so awesome! I just discovered Ultimate just over a year ago, and I'm an aussie too. It's great fun, hey! Is there anything in particular you'd like to know?
Hehe, maybe we'll bump into each other at one of the interstate tournaments. That would be very cool.

Here's a photo of me playing ultimate... I'm the pigtailed one in the middle with the disc... I think I might have just caught a point! :D

I played in high school. It was a club sport. I really enjoyed it! Sadly I havent played in years and have started sucking at simple tasks like catching the fisbee.

Can someone go over the basic rules for a little guy like me?

Anoo:
  • 7 players per team on the field at one time
  • The aim is to score in your team's "end zone". This is done by a player on your team catching it in the end zone area (known as scoring a point).
  • Players can hold the disc for a maximum of 10 seconds, otherwise it results in a "turn over" (possession of the disc goes to the other team)
  • If the disc is dropped or thrown it off the field, this is also a turnover.
  • Players aren't allowed to run with the disc - they must come to a complete stop before throwing it
  • Frisbee is non-contact and self-refereed. Use of the "spirit score" encourages good sportsmanship

How's that? :) Are you thinking of playing frisbee?

There's a wikipedia article over here, that explains things in more detail.

Awesome thanks Mazil :P

We had a frisbee the other day and somebody goes, "Hey let's play Ultimate Frisbee!" We all agreed, until we realised none of us actually knew how to play... :P

i play ultimate frisbee often with my bunch of friends, but we invent our own rules due to the limited space ): hahaha.

and we only hold a frisbee for 5 seconds because we like things fast.

Anoo and cpt702, that's cool! Nice to hear people trying out some frisbee-in' :)

You guys might be interested in a variant called "Hot Box". It's good for small spaces and for smaller groups of people.

Basically, you have an area marked out like this:
Code:
-----------------------
|                     |
|        ____         |
|       |____|        |
|                     |
-----------------------

There are two teams of 2-4, and you have to try and pass the frisbee first to someone who is outside the box (the big box) and then into the goal area (the small box in the middle). If the frisbee is intercepted or dropped by a team, the possession goes to the other team - who must then restart by throwing it out of the box first before being able to try for a goal (the whole "out of the box" thing is called "clearing", in the Wikipedia article).

Most the normal frisbee rules apply, but usually the time limit for holding the disc is decreased to about 7 seconds.

It pretty frantic and fun :)

We play ultimate all the time at my school. It's great!

I've played a couple of times but usually during band practice I'll see about 16 or so guys playing on the football field right next to our practice field. They made it a contact sport, and it looks like sooooo much fun. I don't play because I'm kind of horrible at catching it, that and my friends are lame and don't want to play. Oh well.

Oh, ultimate. What a game. It's been a while since I've played, so I think I'll try to get a game going tomorrow.
I'm actually very surprised my school doesn't have a team, seeing as there are many students and teachers who absolutely love the game.
