*I'll explain the joke since I'm likely the only Irish speaker here... The "ín"/"een" ending in Irish means little, similar to the Spanish diminutive "ito/ita." So "smithereens" as a word has an emphasis on "tiny" in Irish. It does mean "small pieces" in English as well, but the joke would be more apparent in Irish since I could add the "ín" ending onto the word hope. Yes, the explanation is longer than the joke. Why are you still reading this? I'm done. Are you seriously still reading? Heh. I wonder how much longer I could have gone on before you'd stop reading...
