I'm new to working on these puzzles. Is the mystery pic in exactly the same direction as you will see it on the site, or will you sometimes need to rotate it to find it?

It should always be in the same direction, you never(as of yet it never happened) have to rotate it. The image is just a blown up size of a certain part of an image which you try to find to right match.
