I think that's a complement :) Yar!

Don't get me started on the movie. I'm not happy about it. For starters the press releases have the evil capital P that I thought I killed in 2000.

Haha, yes it was. It reminds me a little of Monty Python but makes more sense. :P

And I noticed the capital "P", these silly newspeople need to do more research before they do their articles.

They could potentially make an awesome movie. The BFM war was pretty good with the plotline and all. if that was the movie and they made it well, i'd totally go see it

What concerns me is that the people writing it may be WB staffers who haven't really played on the site at all :|

Yeah but inflation will most defintley go up with a billion and a half new members. I wonder how bad it will get...And how many new users...and how many new pets named lolzneopetzroxcutebabyz1129928380.

I get scared thinking about it...will it get to the point where I'll have to leave neo?

Once they get enough user base to support Neopets as a premium site, they would make everyone pay a fee to log into Neopets. This might come in phases, like restricting unpaid members priviledges first then slowly convert into a 100% subscription site. I have seen many sites did that and sense that Neopets are moving towards this same direction. Right, Mr Dohring?

There is nothing much we as regular players can do but to anticipate hopefully. Hope that Neopets would change their path and return to being a community based website(money comes in slowly but have more loyal members who would support their merchandise)? Nah! Let's hope that some people would create a website competitive enough to make Neopians move over. I am surprised that no one site can achieve that yet but soon...my friends..soon.

God, if I hadn't already basically left Neo this would surely do it!

Sat Mar 26, 2005 5:11 am

Neo is co-financing this? And they need to have all these ads all over the place to keep the site running? Huh?

As far as
``From the very beginning, we wanted to introduce the characters through the Web and bring it into the real world. It's not low budget to make a quick buck. We're making a quality film to develop the story line.''

Who's "we" in this - did Adam and Donna always want to do a movie? And they're not looking to make a "quick buck"? Please. Someone somewhere in the company sure seems to be trying to do just that with ads cropping up everywhere.

And the idea that
While the characters boast a sizable following online, toy industry observer Jim Silver said they haven't fully caught on with consumers. While a hot brand such as Mattel Inc.'s Barbie or MGA Entertainment's Bratz dolls could be tarnished if a movie tanked, he saw only an upside for the lesser-known Neopets.

``When you've got a successful property, do a movie and it fails, it hurts the brand,'' said Silver, who publishes Toy Wishes Magazine. ``They've got a successful Internet brand, but not much exposure elsewhere, so they can attract new people. There's definitely potential there.''

is almost insulting to those of us who have been with Neopets for a long time (or even a short time) - basically we're mindless drones who will stay with the site even if the movie "tanks" and "tarnishes" the image of the site.

The only reason to do a movie is, in my opinion, to push the merchandise harder. If they make the merchandise affordable, well made (the faerie cybunny was definitely of inferior quality and the desk set things are just awful) and more widely available I think people would buy more merchandise.

Now, if the idea of making a movie is to make money for the site and that money will be pumped into the site to keep it going, running well and the ads removed, then by all means, make that movie!

Please no more McDonald's promos! I barely survived the last one, and never did get all the plushies I wanted. I don't think I could go through going from McD to McD seeing which place got what in. If they HAVE to do another promotion, make it short and alot less things to collect.

The reason they are making movies is to make money(as if we didn't know :P) and also to promote Neopets brand awareness which will bring more users to their sites and buy their merchandise. I don't think they will finance the operation cost of Neopets.com from proceeds they get from the movie. The proceeds would go into their big fat bonus. They will run Neopets.com as a different entity.

TNT does not know what will happen because of the movie; but we all do. (I don't really know what I'm getting at...)
Like most people have pointed out, millions of new players will join, and there will be item inflation, neopets might become a pay site, making many members quit.
Yeah, they're definitly in for the money. And the fame. But, if this movie doesn't work out, it will be a disaster for neopets.(I think someone already said that...)
Neopets was big, but everything's gonna go down from here. Bye bye, neopets!
If the movie does happen to work out, then neopets will become bigger, and bigger, and, well, I think you probably know what will happen. (Read some posts! ;))

*tries to picture neopets becoming bigger than it already is*
Gosh. A TV show?

Sat Mar 26, 2005 6:43 am

I shudder to think about this movie. I can just picture it now...

The main character, an irresponsible, obnoxious idiot called Cash, throws a round white and red ball onto the ground. His neopet pops out in the form of a yellow Meerca. "Meerca!" It yells, before electrocuting everyone nearby, including Cash, who throws a temper tantrum.
His opponent laughs as his Shoyru breathes fire and hops back into its NeoBall.

You don't actually have to collect them all, you know.

Lol. But we do. <3 Actually, I haven't been as thrilled about collecting plushies since that McD's promotion. It just overdid it. I still need like 40 something of them and it burned me out. Not to mention that we didn't eat McD's again for many months afterwards.

With all this talk of merchandising, there is not one mention of comic books. :( I wait and wait, but still no comic books. Aren't there any cool geeks on the Neopets team?

Anyway, it says two to three years before the movie supposedly comes out. That's a long time. A lot of stuff can happen before then. Maybe things will get better, maybe not. I'm still not going to pass judgement until I see the final project.

(Please make comic books.)

As I've said since day one of the ad-era. Doug Dohring happily boasts the 8 figure revenue Neopets made with pre-ads. But of course, an internet site requires at least 10 figures so it's natural they need more money to keep it free

From the Dohring interview:

It's not low budget to make a quick buck.

Bull poop.

Ok, I personally think their taking this way to far....

1st, they have a great site with millions of players, I wouldn't want that to change!

2nd, they have tons of merchandice to get money.

Now why do they want a movie.... because they are golddiggers.
Yeah they have neopets premium, but that probobly money that goes for new merchandice and paying these great people who work for neopets.
But a movie, I wouldn't go and see that its probably just a piece of rotten bolognia.

I personally see more promise in it then both most PPTers and NNNers. That neopets is making a movie, good, more money for the site=less down time, mORE FUN time. I think that it will steer the site away from the myth of it being for 8 year old girls. I support it, I've never seen a bad Worner(sp?) bros film.

I ate at McDonalds about 20 times that month or just went there to buy a plushie. All I got was about 25 (a few sames) but I had about 50 considering I took my sisters and brothers and have lost them. If they do another Neopets promotion make it inside cereal boxes. That was the best one since you didn't have to eat the cereal right away.
