Here's a little something that might help people using Firefox and Adblock.
I've noticed that some of the new ads aren't actually ads persay, but scripts that place a cookie for tracking purposes. This uses a script that slows down the loading of the web page.
You can block this with Firefox and Adblock, but not just by using the option in the right-click menu. What you need to do is bring up the list of all the blockable elements in the page by pressing Ctrl+Shift+A.
After bringing up the list, you're looking for a script element that originates from an outside site, like this...
Once you've found one, you can block it indiviually, or use the * wildcard to block all scripts from that site.
Hope this helps the situation a little.

Too many people to quote, but I'm not new. I'm older than dirt and twice as smelly. I've been playing Neopets since 2000, so I do remember the original rainbow fountain, totems, etc. Totems only meant early, not exclusive access and the Rainbow fountain was a scam. I signed up for every single sponsor and never got to paint my pets, but I digress...I'd hardly say that those early stages of site development are comparable to the current state of affairs. While it's true sponsors played a more obvious role in the site back then, Neopets wasn't a multimillion dollar corporation and Donna and Adam were still running the show. Neopets became what is is because of constantly innovating. We're supposed to be out of the dark ages by now.
I wasn't speculating on sponsor related features, those will always exist, but turning daily activies into sponsor ones. Say, having to vist a credit card site to collect your bank interest. Maybe forcing you to sign up for a Best Western newsletter to put your pet in the Neolodge. Or Ads placed directly in between each page that you will be forced to look at for a certain amount of time before you are redirected.

People on the site are definitely buzzing about both the new ad and the inappropriateness of the ads. That pregnant one and there's apparently (haven't seen yet) one for *ahem* a men's "enhancement" prescription.
I'm sorry. This garbage does NOT belong on Neo. Heck, I wouldn't really want to see it anywhere, but having ads that if you said many of the words would get you iced before you could take a breath?
They're very clear - no discussion of "adult", "real life", etc. type of things. But those ads that anyone can see are ok?
D. Dohring needs a huge reality check, either that or he needs to go have an auditing course done and get back on track.
Adam and Donna, time for a coup! Take back your creation, don't wait for it to be run into the ground and left for dead.
Huggles, heavens forbid - having to click an ad to be able to do anything basically? Then the site would be as good as gone.

I'm on IE and I don't see the bottom ads, which is awesome and all, but I'm puzzled as to why they don't show up for me.

We're being pulled out of the "Dark Ages" in the same way Lenin and Stalin did it to Russia. ⌐_⌐

I believe that it is an alien conspiracy! Doug Dohring's children are podlings like 'Village of the Damned"! Here's the proof.

I'm hearing about "male enhancement" ads on the NeoBoards. NOW they've crossed the line.

I guess the content of the ads depend on where you live- I'm in Canada, and I only see advertisements for Classmates.com, Looney Tunes Cursors, University of Phoenix, Google text ads, and Jamster ringtones. I've also seen an Attack of the Slorgs one.
The one "good" thing about these ads are that they're not giving me that annoying ActiveX message. I usually get two of those popping up at a time per few pages.
Guess uhh...maybe changing your country helps just slightly?

Anywho, "Male Enhancement" ads? You've gotta be kidding me.

Yoshi, I was just on my gallery account (non-premium - you can only have 1 account premium unless you get the dial-up service). I got that active x thing on like 3 pages - from the topbanner.
So, now I've experienced the full effect of having 3 ads on one page on dial up. It took about a minute! for each page to load. So that little announcement saying it shouldn't take longer? HAH!
I will, I guess, have to contact support and let them know why everything in my gallery is being sent back to my main account. As of right now, I believe I will be sending things back to my main, doing some donating, returning a few gifts, then the hard part (this'll take awhile to get to) ... putting my pets (all painted, 2 adopted, 2 created) up for adoption. It's either that or having an empty account and the pets in the lodge forever. That makes no sense.
I cannot abide this. It's too much, it's sensory overload on me due to my physical limitations and there's no escaping the ads by scrolling down the page anymore; not to mention my patience waiting for a page to load and worrying about random cookies, etc. trying to get onto my computer.
I should not have to get a different browser (which may or may not work with my ISP) just to block ads on a site that's supposed to be fun.
This has got to be one of the more depressing nights for me. The one thing I love and use to escape from RL that gives me pleasure has effectively been cut at least in half.

Has anyone tried reporting those inapproriate ads? It is worth a try. Click on the banners button in the bug report page.

i had to add my two cents in here (long-time lurker, then joined [ya'll are a great community] but still mainly lurk due to my busy schedule) ... i adjusted to the top add pretty well, figured fine whatever.. i can deal with is, especially since i play snowmuncher a lot and that's one of the main top banners i get ... but this new bottom add really ticks me off ...
i have high-speed cable internet, but it's still slowing down my computer a lot... plus, i play sakhmet solitaire a lot on the site... but it's ridiculous to have to click two or three times to move a card because the page doesn't want to load, then lose chances to "draw" because page doesn't load and i have to refresh ... also, i never accidentally click on the top ads, but i accidentally did do this a few times on the bottom ads and got directed to spam sites... thankfully my browser (myie2) blocked the pop-ups ... but this is what caused my first hard drive to crash and make my IE on this computer unusable ....
i've played neopets for almost 4 years now ... my first account was frozen ... for some reason i never figured out ... and i took time off then came back ... but these ads are really pushing it ... i'm a college student who uses neopets as a way to unwind from class and basically relax doing something fun, however i feel like i am being used by neopets now, and i don't like that feeling at all ....
i really hope this bottom ad is only a trial and not a permenant thing ::sigh:: i can at least hope
