There was talk of Viacom playing 'nasty' on an animation board I frequent in my spare time (which isn't much) some months ago. There was nothing mentioned, only that Viacom's "next big thing" involved something "kids to adults dearly loved". Neopets sprang to mind a month later, but I dismissed the idea as hogwash.

Now I see the worst fear is realised.
Welcome to a shipload of money pouring in from god-knows-where and god-knows-who-cares, so long as its successful.

Ads?
We'll probably see more, and much more annoying ones, in the coming months.

Pay to play?
They better think it out first - not everyone can afford to pay in USD because our conversion rates suck.

Premium users?
Who knows what else you lucky ducks shall recieve whilst the rest of us battle it out for good random events versus random events that do nothing at all.

Onsite War Battles?
Eeh, let's not talk shop about this, ne? ^^;

I guess my main concern lies with the franchise and the merchandising - especially the movie. If WB is still doing it, that is. As I recall in the past Warner Brothers and Paramount Pictures have rarely been "civil" with one another when it comes to the decision of animation, or at least a film whose storyline actually doesn't sound a like a complete clique.

I am worried.
Viacom have played dirty in the past, I wonder what they're up to really...?

Oh Marinnai, you had a clue long before the rest of us! Of course you would dismiss it though. I know I'd think, hmmm Neopets? Nah!

I really hope they don't try anything drastic ... thinking fansites as well as things like more ads (do I really want to see Hillary, Britney, et al. in my face? not really).

Pay to Play? I highly doubt that the site would become a total pay to play. There simply are way too many people who can't or won't pay. I never thought I'd get premium -- I was totally deadset against it for a long time. But dialup + bannerzilla = extreme lag in page loading (sometimes over 5 minutes) and spyware I just don't need to have to keep dealing with. I will say this about REs, yes I have premium, yes I've had it since last September (longer than I thought), NO I don't see any increase in real REs. I get Adee, the dragon flying, etc. Only things we definitely get are the space faerie sc once a week, the occasional SHH in our email (usually a lottery win of about 500 np) and 1k np a month. that's my experience anyway.

I do hope also that they actually increase the amount of staff - more personal interaction, less automated responses (when we even get one). And I hope they don't play dirty on us or the staff at TNT.

Fool, your comment - Viacom owns Spongebob - what's up with that? Anything that would give those of us who don't watch or know that much about the show that could give us a clue or hint of what could happen?

took me a bit to reply. viacom didnt care when it said it was okay to have star trek sites or other scifi related sites and shut them down left nad right just because they had the power to. We actually had to band together a "resistance" to keep our sites up and HIDE some fan sites so for me i see other problems with viacom that most would not unless they actually had to fight htem before for kepeing up a site.

Power in numbers amigos. 25 million angry users aren't going to sit well with Viacom. They know that we've got the power to make or break them. Remember Today Tonight? Public opinion will literally destroy any bad ideas that they may have.

If they shut down PPT, then Neodaq, Neocolours and IDB won't be far behind. And if the hundreds of thousands (if not millions) who frequent those websites get angry enough, Viacom will have to rethink their rash decisions.

Either way though, the first sign that any of the regular staff are leaving, I'll be gone. No Adam or Donna = No Neo. Simple.

Sources say things will remain pretty much the same, except the staff are now being paid in Gak. ;)

I don't think Viacom is stupid enough to go around shutting down fansites, especially when there's already such an established community. Plus, wasn't PPT very careful not to include any Neopets-copyrighted material? So really, they'd have no legal foothold in shutting us down.

As for P2P, I doubt it, at least not in the next few years.

And if we get more ads... well, someone's going to get an earful.

Judging from their set, I think they just really like spongebob. So- anyone that owns Spongebob can own Neopets. :P I think.

Anyway, I read all the posts, and there are a lot of interesting ways this can be handled. As long as it doesn't go pay to play, I'll still remain at Neopets.

And for the pay to play idea- I highly douby TNT would say that nothing will change, and then all of a sudden make everyone pay. It just doesn't make a lot of sense.

That's not right. At least PPT has the other channels now, so we could just retreat into them and change the forum around a bit.

I hope it won't become pay-to-play. I wouldn't want to spend real money to keep playing, let alone that much.
