I am a lab rat 17 + months of zapping once I was lvl 53 and got sent back to level one and once when I got back over 40 I lost levels 4 out of 7 times in one week trust me there is no such thing as it wont zap away levles or reset to if yer a certain level as it'd reject out the randomness of it.
However I love the ray atm I am on a robot blumaroo and I havent stopped zapping my friends fire jetsam just went turble though.. and my bunny is darigan so I am happy I like da bunny *doesnt zap da bunny now*

You go to games, type in map, go to laboratory, then follow the links from there. 
As mentioned, the lab can lower your pets' level regardless of how high it is. I labbed my 50+ pet for quite a while, and believe me, the money it takes to keep the level above 50 can be quite staggering.
However, it IS true that the lab won't take your pets level all the way down to one if the level is above 10.

How much is the full lab right now? They have raised a lot in price. It's a pretty good deal if you ask me. I hate it when your pets go to level 1. ToT I can never past level 10 so it keeps on lowering my pets level back to 1. xD

I don't actually know how much lab map prices are anymore, since I'm no longer in the map business. However, I have seen some around 600k recently, so I'd guess that a full map off the wiz would run around 570k.
*Edit* Did a quick estimate off wiz prices, and I came up with about 550k. So anything around there should be a good price.

I would definately do it. I accidently used it on my shoyru and it changed to island. That was awsome. 
On my main lab pet, i'm using it on eyrie and she gain over 140hp. But make sure your pet is at level 50 or higher. You might lose all of the levels.

I don't battle much, but I bought the lab map anyway, but back when is was much cheaper. I only like it because of the possibility that it may change my pet into a different species or color. I am going to keep zapping my lab pet until I get a color/species that I really like, because my lab pet is currently a Disco Meerca (which is okay...but not that great).
I think you should buy it, provided you don't mind spending so much NP all at once. In the long run, though, I guess the cost of all of those paint brushes would be more than the lab map.
There is also always the possibility of it changing into something you don't like. But then again, that is what is so fun about it, you don't really know what you're going to get.

the map can be most cruel and then some as ity is I have to keep yusiong it at 230-+ hps cuz I cant train anything else till like lvl 75 and I refuse to pay alla those dubs and codes to get there to train one defense point so might as well keep zapping lol

If you're an avatar lover, there's a chance that you could get a few avatars from it, though it may take awhile to get that Coconut Jubjub...
Any, it's a great investment, even if you're not into battling. There are some lab-only colors you can get, a few of which are really nifty. For example, my Ixi went from green to jelly. Not too bad, in my opinion.

Yeah. i got my lab map back when I complained about each piece being 20K *laughs* I just got a random lab map piece in a random event and sold it for 75K...But still..it HAS to be worth it..especialy since some colors you can only get via the ray..unless you count the fountain..but I wouldn't hold my breath on that. I just got a Tyrannian paint job today and my pet is well past 100 Hit points...so it would be worth it just for the chance of eventually getting to my goal of Robot Jetsam
