I only recently started on Neopets, so I never had the threat of account abuse from my siblings, but I grew up playing Creatures and Petz (and still, do, actually), and I remember being constantly concerned that someone would utterly destroy my pets out of spite. And, of course, my parents' reaction would be, "It's a virtual toy. Get over it."
That line changed pretty quickly when a "real" toy was involved, though. Go figure.

Yeah you're right, though. If you spend real time on it then it is real to an extent. I remember hearing a news report about a person in China (I think it was China) who murdered his friend because he had been playing World of Warcraft and had a very rare weapon and his friend stole it and sold it for real money. His friend had the nerve to say it wasn't real. That's when he killed him. Really sad.
