There are also so many more games you can play than there were.

The site rewards people that have forever to spend on it playing all of these games, restocking, trading, whatever it is they do. It's a legitimate business practice. Just because the prices are out of reach for some doesn't make it unfair.

notice the word, it's a game. thus referring to that it is supposed to be fun. There is nothing fun about a game that takes "forever" to get money in. plus, when you do get lots of money you have careful not to get frozen by report happy New Member or the Unfair mods of neopets.

Wow, this is still going!

Morningstar, I hope that was just hype. You know, someone deciding to wind the rest of us up thinking there'd be another wave of duping. The time is in poor taste, I agree with that.

OK, inflation, the high price of having the good stuff on the site. No, I don't have alot of the good stuff, I never will. Yes I play games, I'm just learning how to rs (boy is that tough!), bottom line? I'll never be "rich". But that's ok.

Inflation, a freezing, warning -- whatever -- there is no justification for what happened last night. Deliberately disrupting the site, costing the company real life money just in staff (I'm sure there's been some ot involved with this), the aggravation, all the people who've been frozen, the level of distrust and apprehension to just about anything ... I can't think of an excuse for it.

Goodness knows, I'm a soap-box person when TNT does something I really don't like. But I also try to acknowledge and appreciate all that they do for us too. They didn't deserve this, all the honest members of the site didn't deserve this.

EC, if you notice the BD chats, no one is talking about duping or frozen accounts anymore. However, I did see one guy talking earlier about how his account and aim had been hacked and ht bd items stolen and not two minutes later the board was gone and the account was iced. So, I cannot tell whether the mods are deleting these boards as fast as they are being written or whether this whole thing is speculation and overactive imaginations. OR whether it was a possibility but the bad guys got thwarted. I do plan on sticking around tonight just because my curiousity has gotten the better of me.

Missing the point here. The topic is about duped items. People DO NOT have the right to duplicate items, or justify the duplication of items, just because prices are inflated.

And, actually, I spend less time on games and make more nps on them than I used to because there are more sponsor games. 15K for a bit more than an hour of time is pretty good, I'd say. And, being the reseller that I have turned into, I make a whole heck of a lot more nps now than I ever dreamed possible.

Morningstar, I have visited the BD Chat and have seen alot! of topics going Poof or just peoples' posts in topics disappearing. I'm guessing that TNT told the mods to delete anything about duping. This usually happens after something big. People are "allowed" to talk about it for awhile, then there seems to be a cutoff where it's suddenly NOT ok to talk about.

I know someone got iced - they were warned - for having something in their siggy that pertained to the alleged dupers.

I'm going to try to stick around and just lurk ... but we're getting some really severe pop-up storms. It's been around 100 degrees here every day for the past week, very humid and it's all coming to a head. So if there's thunder or lightning, I turn everything off and unplug immediately.

Things are definitely tense on the site. It's rather odd being able to almost "feel" a level of anxiety over the internet, but it's definitely there.

I hope this is it - that whatever was posted earlier was just "talk". I'm not sure how much more people can take -- and I'm not sure how much more staff can take before they snap. I'm sure the office was an interesting place today!

Now, as to the assertation that things are inflated.....

Of course they are. Neopets, while it is not democratic, has an economy closely resembling a democratic one. Each item, like it or not, is priced according to supply, demand, and relative value. The problem is not with the items, or the users. (Although, some items are falsely inflated, which also happens in real-world economies) The problem is with the neopoints themselves.

Each item holds a value in the currency of Neopets (neopoints). Wether it be great or small, that item can be traded for currency, which means that neopoints have a value of their own. Few neopoints in the economy mean that each neopoint is highly valuable, since there aren't many shared among the general population. Thus, a rare item, (say, a paint brush) may be sold for only 10,000 neopoints, and the person would consider themselves to have gotten a good deal of money for it.

However, the Neopets system is intrinsically flawed. As more games are created, and more users join, the total amount of neopoints in the system increases. Therefore, the value of each individual neopoint goes down. Since there are more neopoints to go around, the cheap paint brushes are either purchased, or shop owners raise their prices. The ratio of neopoint to paint brush changes, since there is only a fixed amount of paint brushes available, and the supply is being decreased faster than it is being increased.

The major problem is, there is no system to remove neopoints from circulation. If neopoints were being removed, say in the neopian shops, the value of the neopoint would rise again, causing the price of items to drop, since you can now buy more for your neopoint. But at the moment, it is theoretically possible for someone to play the game without ever removing a single neopoint from the system. Since the neopoint is constantly increasing in volume, its value will always drop, while the items, which remain at a relatively fixed volume, will rise in price.

Hope that makes sense. :)

Now, on topic. Thanks for warning everyone, I hope if it IS just a prank, that those people will be caught and punished. It's just as bad to try to cause panic for your own laughs as it is to abuse a glitch.

Thu Jul 28, 2005 4:42 am

Well, it was either a prank or the dupers were thwarted or they decided to strike at another time. Because 9:11 has passed. However, there were several boards on the BD chats created in anticipation and counting down the minutes.

Thu Jul 28, 2005 5:37 am

As far as I can tell, nothing "big" happened -- but I did see someone saying they found a shop with 100 duped lab map pieces. So beware, there's apparently still alot of things on the site that shouldn't be there. It's that or someone found another way to dupe items. Oh yeah, scratchcards were duped too. The list just keeps growing.

Either way, it's very discouraging and disheartening. I know I'm frustrated right now - I'm not even pricing the things I have in my shop and I know for a fact that they're all legit - it's either stuff I've had in my sdb forever (yes, I am truly a packrat - and lazy) or the few things I've been able to rs (mostly books) from the main Shops.

The advice on the BD and just about everywhere is don't shop from user shops/auctions/tp. What this means for inflation, unless you're a good rs'er (which I'm not - just started learning this week with new internet connection), there's very little np being circulated.

Amarise wrote:The major problem is, there is no system to remove neopoints from circulation.

Hmm.... There's another way to fix things, without removing NP from the system: increase the supply of items (proportionally to the number or players, or proportionally to the number of NP in the system, or dynamically as a price control).

Thu Jul 28, 2005 9:29 am

I'm amazed at how the site degenerated from a place of normaility to absolute chaos in the space of two days. The lack thereof of patience in earning those items fairly like everyone else totally amazes me. Natural Selection misses people very easily these days, doesn't it? Not to say a few others don't deserve to have every single one of their accounts taken away for the blunt cheating and duplication of items.

I missed this whole mess. This started not less than a DAY after I traded for a Kougra TP. I've been on Nutrinopets and offline getting my life back together after another setback (yay...).

I'm stunned, actually. Stunned and angry that people ON PPT took advantage of this mess. To those people who abused this "glitch", congratulations - you just proved your breed of humankind never deserved life in the first place.

"I'm angry" - HA! What a stellar human being you are!

Thu Jul 28, 2005 9:58 am

Well, it looks as if we've gotten past the worst of it. It's all been patched up and hopefully we won't be seeing something like this for quite a while.

Does anyone have the feeling that TNT may leave many of these items in circulation to lower their prices? I mean, people were constantly complaining to them about how pricey everything was. Well, now the economy has just deflated a fair bit :P

Oh and... one Quick Question:

Are Nerkmids safe to buy. I have the unsanitable urge to use one for some reason.

Thu Jul 28, 2005 11:20 am

good question, Twisted Sanity. Well, I've being buying 2 or 3 codestones a day for the past two or so weeks, but I will stop untill monday, to give TNT time to sort the mess up.

Better safe than sorry.

By the way, thanks a lot, PPT. Lurking this thread helped me a lot. Very informative and helpful info. Kudos all around.

And now because of this there's been a mass hysteria... @_@; I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm going about my business as normal. If Neo freezes me, FINE! It's just a game.
