Well, I failed. XD I know that wasn't my answer. But is that maybe the reason I have 1k and when I DID have 400np+...

Perhaps by a stroke of luck you typed your answer wrongly and input the correct one instead. ;)

Does lc normally go into a screwed up mode before a new one? Since it says some weird stuff on the current page.

The current prize for the first correct entries is a . You will also get a cool trophy that people can see when they do a user lookup on you! And all correct entries will split the 0 Neopoint prize pool.

There's nothing wrong with the page.Everything is normal for me.

By the way, if anyone still wanted to know, you had to add 3762 and 8271, using base 9.:D

Now that it's over, I can say this:

sirclucky wrote:meh. I was checking every 30 minutes or so this morning... finally forget to check at bang! they release it . This one was totally messed up-not only was it really easy... the trophy is all about who had the time to refresh it non stop, type in the answer, and get a gold trophey and a rare book(books are always the best lenny c prize.... behind good weapons for course ). I really think they should have tweaked the puzzle some... made it something like

2+2=4
4+4=8
153+479=601
3762 + 8271 = ?

and see how many people would not catch the change (the 153+479 thing is another hit, btw)

479 is not a number in base 9. When you are displaying number in a particular base, you cannot have the base number in any of the values. For example, what is the symbol for ten? You may have never though about it, but there is no symbol for ten. Sure, there's 10, but that's just a 1 for the ten^1 place and a zero for the ten^0 place. In base 9, 9 technically doesn't exist, that's why there were no 9s in the numbers they gave us. If they had given us a 9, the problem would be impossible, since it wouldn't be in base 9.

i think they were trying to put 153+479=601 in base eleven, which still doesnt work because the answer would be 611 not 601. ( i think they for got to carry the one. ) even if they could use 9 in a base nine system 153+479=601 wouldnt work.

sorry... must have done my quick math wrong there :P was supposed to be in base 11... just proof that I cant add :P = i have no idea how I got those numbers :D

I got the LC right! :) Here's a complete explanation of it.

2+7=9 no objections here, right? ;)
base means the number where you add another digit once you reach that number.
9 ---> base
10 ---> don't exist since base is lower than 10.
From base 10 to base 9, 10 is the same as 9, and the inverse.
In simple words, we have to group values until 9, where we add a new digit
5(base10)+7(base10)=12 That's one group of 10 and 2 leftovers.
5(base9)+7(base9)= 13 That's one group of 9 and 3 leftovers.

`3762
+````
`8271
--------
13143

2+1=3
6+7=14
7+2=10
3+8=12
0+0=0

3+140+1000+12000+0=13143

Simple. :)

I remembered the concept of base 9 from high school but couldn't remember quite how to do the steps. So, I used this site: http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/55726.html

So, basically, this is how I did it:

3762 + 8271.

First, you add the ones column. 2 + 1 = 3. 3 is less than 9 so 3 is the number to put in the ones column.

Then, you add the tens column. 6+ 7=13. However, 13 is greater than 9. So, you have to subtract 9 from 13 and carry one to the hundreds column. 13 - 9 = 4. So, you put the 4 in the tens column.

Then, you add the hundreds column. 7 + 2 + 1 (the one you carried over from the tens column) = 10. 10 is greater than 9. So, you have to subtract 9 from 10 and carry one to the thousands column. 10 - 9 = 1. So, you put the 1 in the hundreds column.

Then, you add the thousands column. 3 + 8 + 1 (the one you carried over from the hundreds column) = 12. 12 is greater than 9, So, you have to subtract 9 from 12 and carry one to the ten thousands column. 12 - 9 = 3. So, you put the 3 in the thousands column.

The only thing in the ten thousands column is the 1 you carried over from the thousands column. 1 is less than 9. So, you put the 1 in the ten thousands column.

Put them altogether and you get 13143.
