Dodgy Banner Ad

Thu Dec 02, 2004 2:20 pm

I've just seen a really dodgy ad. It was across the top, for screensavers.com.
Santa was moving around the banner ad, with a set of crosshairs that moved with your mouse and on the right it said

"Bonk santa for a free screensaver"

Surely this could be taken more than one way ;)

*thanks God for Firefox*

I doubt most kids could/would take this any other way. =P

Yeah, what's the "other way" anyway? o_O Isn't "bonk" something like "hit"? 0:)

I think it's mostly British slang... but look it up on urbandictionary.com if you're curious as to the other meaning.

i have noticed alot of the ads that i see in the banner are mostly some thing British Any clue why this might be?? Another think is i have seen ads for williamhill.co.uk (gambling site) , Now im wondering if some kid under the age of 13 clicked on it would it go to this gambling site. This is ironic as Neopets have put ban on children playing gambling games but they let them see a banner advertising it

Since your location thing on here says Scotland, I bet that's what you put for location on Neopets too. Most of the ads are country-specific; that's why you're getting a lot of British ads.

I have an under-13 account and have never seen an offsite banner. I think it's possible that under-13s don't see them at all. Unfortunately, I'm 13 in six days... again, thank God for FireFox adblock.

Yeah, someone on the neoboards said that they had seen a Green Card ad. Not sure if they were under 13... I think that they weren't.

Probably is like already said - Under 13 people can't see them. It's still amusing to see Green Card ads on Neopets. :P

Hmm, yes bonk does have more than one meaning. It's more the site that it's advertising IMO. I've been to a couple of those screensaver sites (before I knew better) and many of them are loaded with trackers and other spyware.

I'm in the US so I'm not seeing gambling ads at all. Green card? Like a credit card or the one you need to work in anoher country?

I'm getting Google, Ask Jeeves, Yahoo Hotjobs, Mitsubishi, NY Times, Verizon mainly right now.

Amusing it is....
Almost all of the off site ads i'v been getting are for green cards...

Image

BTW, on the right it says : "Click here to enter the lottery", lottery as in a chance to win a green card

The US Greencard Lottery has absolutely no place on Neopets.

I'm almost annoyed at that as I am at the US Navy banners and sponsor adds they were offering.

And besides, if the 'Greencard Lottery' led you anywhere but the official US Gov site for information (like the US Gov would advertise THAT on Neopets), it's a scamsite. They'll offer to help you fill out your applications, or 'guarentee' you a card for... x ammount of money. Going through one of those sites probably actually reduces the chance of getting a Greencard ...

The tracking cookies are one issue, but they're not extrodinarily dangerous. The spyware is bad, and the links to the sites that have them (that darn weatherbug and the free smilies/cursor place) really should NOT be allowed. Links to SCAM SITES... ... ...
