apache/mod_gzip

Fri Oct 22, 2004 8:53 am

Ok so we installed mod_gzip on all the Neopets servers tonight. Basically what this does is

a) the web server zips the file (like winzip)
b) the web server sends the zipped HTML page to the browser, as opposed to plain text
c) the browser unzips the file and displays the page like usual and the user is completely oblivious.

The only thing that has really changed is that the amount of information sent from the Neopets servers to your computer has been reduced by around 70%.

Basically, this will reduce the average Neopets page (around 20k of HTML) to 6-8K. Although this will not make a noticeable difference to broadband users, modem users will be able to browse the site twice as fast (assuming their images are cached). Also it means less network traffic so the site is faster in general *cheer*

So anyway, if anybody does find a noticeable difference in speed browsing the Neopets web site tomorrow please let me know, I am interested to hear what you have to say!

I definately noticed that the site was running faster this morning compared to last night, cos it was lagging like mad yesterday!

Ahh, the site runs perfectly! I must say, the new toolbar is nice, too.

Three cheers for Adam!

The site was going extremely slow for me a couple hours ago, but it seems fine now. :) (I'm on broadband, btw.)

well, it is noticeably loading faster, it takes a while when loading for first time, though but once the sidebar is loaded, it runs quite fast. Although when refreshing it also refreshes the toolbar, meaning it slows the page down. But other than that it runs great!

EDIT: something I just noticed, a bit offtopic, but if you return to a previously opened page with the back button, the clock keeps running from the time that page was open. Example: I went to turmac's at 3:01 am nst, then visited another two pages, but then returned to turmac's page, and the clock was runnin 3:02 and so on....should it do that?

It is running quickly (And it was fun completing Illusen level 35 :P) But is this why the items in user shops are grouping abnormally?
Here's a link to what I'm seeing:

I think that might be due to the Sidebar/Toolbar... but I'm not sure.

I don't get this whole cache business. Can someone explain it to me? *is a New Member* 8)

Cache is your temporary internet files, where your browser stores the images of pages it has visited before for faster loading.

And Adam, nice inprovement to the website there. I'm sure it will benefit dial-up users a lot.

Yes, it does seem to be running faster. *thumbs up*

Adam, I heard a rumor that users who sign up for Neopets Premium will be able to browse the site ad-free. I was wondering: will paying for Premium onlydo away with the ads, or will it remove the yellow banner altogether?

Fri Oct 22, 2004 11:09 am

yes yes! much much better :D *builds a statue of adam out of asparagus*

seriously, it was running really really slowly for me earlier because of the toolbar, even though norton blocks the ads *plus several other images on the site for which i missed out an ice bori* but its improved alot now :) thanks for considering us users on darkage dialup :)

I use a modem sometimes and yes the site definately seems to be running faster now, but overall its still kinda slow :(

I love that the site is running faster now. I did notice a difference.
The main thing I think people are complaining about is user shops are stretched out now and the items are arranged in a funny way. I am sure you guys have a way to fix this soon.
