I think Divine knows that, but some judges choose to mark down simply because some people may not know what a word means, and I think this is a rather poor reason. If people don't know what a word means, hopefully, it'll make them interested enough to research it and expand their vocabulary. This is going to be an exaggerated example, but still get a picture of what I mean;
'Pretty flowers'
Versus
'The transcendency of tulips'
Although some people may not know what transcendency means, doesn't mean they should be marked down for it. It is much better than the first subtext.

I fully agree with Pixa and Icey here.
I recall many rounds in the first few competitions where I was marked down or even eliminated because I had extravagent words in my subtext. As Pixa proved quite nicely, this is not fair. In order to 'dumb down' a subtext to the point where *everyone* will understand it, you're not going to end up with anything worth using, as Pixa's example pointed out quite nicely.

"Dumb down" is a highly offensive term and I assure you I am... well... highly offended.
If I don't know what a word means, then I look it up on http://www.dictionary.com. If there's no definition there or the definition does not make sense, I assume it's not common enough for enough people to see it to make sense. That's when I mark off.

I, for one, have always looked up words in case I didn't know what they meant.
